Fly meets the swatter

Man did Fly drop quick...from a 5.6 in the first Trend to a 4.3 in Phase II. Looks like people sampled it and left quickly. What caused this drop? I say all the TV ads went away, and the newness is wearing off. Mainline can't be satisfied with the quick drop. They're going back towards the levels of when they were Z-93...Z's last book was a 3.9...This is only 0.4 points difference. I wonder if a return to Z-93 could be far behind.

Can we please stop with the return to Z-93 already. It's not going to happen. Mainline wanted to start over once they got WGTZ. It's only been on since November so I think that they are going to give it some time.

I seriously doubt Z-93 will return. They need to dump the WGTZ calls already. However, Mainline has to be concerned with a point-plus drop in this Trend. They've all but lost the 12+ audience that checked out Fly and moved on over the last few months. They need to get an airstaff in place ASAP, and do some promotions. I am shocked they fell off this fast.

I agree with you about the calls. WGTZ needs to be changed. They also need to get their website up and running again as well as the other stuff you said.

As much as I enjoyd Z-93, I must admit it wasn't as hot as it was in the 80s. Fly needs to hire live jocks and get its site back up...otherwise it's just another dull and boring "jack."

Call letters do not matter. The station is known as "Fly." It used to be known as "Z-93." WGTZ is only used once per hour. That's been the case for a long time. Moot point.

Two cents from a teenager:

Dayton could use a station like this, as much as I dislike the format and the station. I don't believe FLY's gonna work, though. MIX will always be the default for at-work and the best variety. I see FLY continuing to fail and not making enough for Main Line to be happy. They could switch some things up here in Dayton and do well.

1. 92.9-- 90'S AND NOW. Like Q102 in Cinci... make it women-targeted and fun. It will do well in offices and in sales. That's something to go up against MIX 1077.

2. 102.9-- RADIO NOW TYPE FORMAT. Mainstream/CHR, but rhythmic-leaning. This is so it wouldn't hurt 929. This willl work in Main Line's favor. You will get the CHR listeners back from Z93, and steal from Pine St. (945)

3. 92.1-- URBAN. Straight Urban. No Rhythmic-leaning, nothing. The WROU listeners will be fine. They survived without an Urban AC for years because U92 was the people's station. Put Harvey in the mornings and they'll be fine. Unless Main Line can purchase 106.5 from CC.

This would make Main Line pretty damn big in Dayton and a definite change in FM radio here. Cutting-edge and market-wise.

Am I wrong?

I hope your not although a teenager, but hey I remember when I was a teen when WING was the long running hit music station with WTUE trying their hand at the format until 1976 switching to album rock. WDJX(before WXEG) tried also ...and both FMs in its hit music format eras did a great job to topple WING. The point here is "keep it new and fresh." "High Flying WING" was a winner in the 60s with its upbeat audio imaging and local personalities before the 70s onslaught of FM. WDJX played all the hits mixed with some album rock here and there and Z-93 in the 80s was also fresh and upbeat. Radio One's ownership and management of Z in my opinion was haphazard as they focused more on its urban format stations. No new audio imaging,no fresh and young up and coming air talent and the magic touch of Great Trails Broadcasting was long gone.

In short I like your idea. Mainline maintains however they did extensive research in developing "Fly" so they don't want to give up that ship yet especially since only a half year into its present format....Maybe a year from now, present your idea again if the Fly ratings continue to decline. Thanks for the input. Radio must listen to the young people once again instead of the demands and greed of the corporate suits.

Call letter change or not, I'd bet many listeners still refer to the station as Z-93, especially since its only been under its new brand for a few months, not to mention those who haven't listened to the station in a while. It is very difficult to change the branding of a heritage station or business. For instance how many people refered to Cinergy Field as Riverfront Stadium or how many people still refer to US Bank Arena as the coliseum. Radio is no different.

lovejamminoldies, I think your idea is great as well.

WDKF is trying their hands at being the only CHR in town and its not doing well. Part could be due to the weak signal, but other being that its poorly managed at the current time.

Mainline is going to keep WGTZ their home of everything. FLY is doing well financially, and in the core demographics, its not doing bad either. They did lose a lot of the younger end in this last phase, and that may be due to the station hitting the 70's and 80's so hard.

I agree that WDHT should shift a little more mainstream (similar to WNOU), however the mass exodus of youth from 92.9 seems to have found appeal in WDHT.

92.1 is an Urban AC for the most part and is a niche. Im not certain, but its billing is okay as well.

101.5 when that moves in, im not sure whats going to happen could always be a player too. Country is doing okay for them in Clark County, but thats going to be a hard pressed sell in the suburbia of Englewood when the giant WHKO is down the street.

I said for years before Z-93 was blown up that they should've been a CHR-leaning Hot AC, much like Q102. CHR/Pop wasn't working for them anymore, or at least the presentation wasn't. They were the bastard stepchild of Radio One, no question about it. It was all about Hot, Hot, Hot to them. We should thank them for running Z-93 into the ground and dividing the audience by even putting Hot on the air.
Fly needs to focus on staying away from the 80s so much. That's why we have Mix 107.7 so they can run the 80s thing into the ground. Play an 80s song here and there, but play 80s songs without a bunch of burn(Stay away from "Jessie's Girl", "Jack and Diane", et al). It also wouldn't hurt for Fly to add a couple of currents in there as well(Katy Perry's "I Kissed A Girl" is a hit across both CHR charts as well as Hot AC). By not playing currents they're giving people a reason to switch to Mix. This is a big flaw in Fly 92.9. Not to mention those 90s songs that people in their late 20s-early 30s would like to hear again for an "Oh, wow!" feel(They have the entire 90s CHR/Pop CD catalog from the Z-93 days). I did hear them play "Mr. Wendal" by Arrested Development awhile back...once. :-\

I agree with you on those scenarios.

WDKF seem to be suffering from a image problem and its not working in their favor. Clear Channel should do something to change that fast, and a long as they continue to stay in the 2-3 rating range its going to be hard for them to convince Dayton that are the only Top 40 in town.

As for WDHT, Main Line is already seeing this as hands off, judging by the numbers Hot 102.9 is getting. Tweaking, probably, but only if WDKF bails out of Top 40, so until then WDHT is going to stick to what works.

FLY Needs to get there website working, airtime staff, re-work the music classic rock is nice but if I want to listen to listen to classic rock I have WZLR, get rid of the old guy DJ voice the guy sounds so un-professional.

Sorry you don't like the voice guy, but he has a large number of clients in the classic rock/classic hits format and voices the Eagle stations Cox owns nationwide.

And..by the way, WZLR is not a classic rock station. It is classic hits. They are two separate animals, format-wise.

It is time for an airstaff, some outside promotions and for gosh sakes, don't decide you're going to promote for the launch then quit.

Fly needs the following:
1. A "Flight Crew", first and foremost.
2. A website that is something more than a generic Splash Page.
3. Change up the music. They've been spinning the same tunes into the ground since the launch.
I still can't believe how quick the audience bailed on this station. It's more mind-boggling than trying to solve a Rubik's Cube. ;D
