Flying Wild Alaska

The Sitka AM's tower site is picturesque and would by Fybush worthy. But group tours don't stop for tower pics.

Hmmm...time to launch Fybush Tower Cruises? ;D

It will be a great trip even without excellent DX.

I've been promised a trip to Gates of the Arctic NP if time permits, which should bring hours of interference free listening even if it is just dead air.

Oh, natch! Alaska is a lovely state. There's more to life than DXing.

cd

Like what? ;D
Seriously, on my trip to Alaska years ago I found it to be really beautiful. Wish I could've gotten up to the Arctic NP.

^ Same here. I have never been north of Fairbanks, and THAT was for a connecting flight.

I'm going to try to make it up there eventually]

47 states down. Three to go. I've flown over two of those at least a dozen times (Idaho and Montana), but Alaska remains elusive! I actually do expect to make it to Idaho and Montana within the next 6-12 months.

"But Alaska remains elusive."

I hope you get the chance to go. Truly a marvelous experience. So many things to do. My favorite was walking on a glacier. I felt like I was in another world.
Unfortunately no DX for me on the trip (trying to stay on topic) ;D

I hope it's somewhat on topic but in the series "Mountain Men", there's a guy who goes to his winter hunting grounds hundreds of miles N of Fairbanks and erects a tall wire antenna (at least 30 ft) to receive a station from North pole AK that provides messages to friends and family in the bush. What was strange was that the call letters KJNP? showed a transmitting freq of 1170 and the guy's setup showed he was receiving the station on 970.
I could be wrong....I din't DVR the show.

since you are talking about Shortwave in Alaska, there is a local Shortwave station preaching the Gospel to Asia, namely KNLS. You might get a sample of this station the farther away you are from the Kenai Peninsula since the station is located south of Anchorage.

There's 1170 KJNP North Pole, but the 970 was likely KFBX in Fairbanks. He probably heard family messages on KFBX as well...

thanks crain for the explanation. it seemed like the guy had a decent signal, maybe 4 or 5 out of 10 with his setup.
