FlyTunes

Anyone familar with this? It is suppose to work on the iPhone via Wifi and AT&T's Edge network, but they aren't saying much else.

I have the iPhone have used FlyTunes. Basically you create a free account and they give you a link which you can bookmark in the Safari browser. My guess is they make deals with streaming services to port their streams to the iPhone.

The thing I like about FlyTunes is it plays the streams with the built-in QuickTime Player which can be minimized and continue to play while you do other stuff with the phone.
The thing I don't like is it takes too many steps and waiting for pages to load to get to a stream, and you can't create a favorite/bookmark list

I like the AOL Radio (free) and Tuner ($5.99) better because you just open the program and get right to a 'station' plus favorites can be saved for easy access.

The AOL pgm contains many CBS terrestrial stations + genre specific music streams with a nice interface that displays album covers and artist/title.

My favorite because of the massive list of streams available is "Tuner" which contains what looks like the SHOUTcast list of streams. Additionally you can add a mp3 or AAC stream if you have the address direct to the stream (data within the pls file, not the pls file itself)

The slick feature of Flytunes that would make it different from a normal radio tuner is that it will "rip" the stream to your phone's memory and in theory if you lost cellular signal or turned it off to get onto a plane, the program detects this and switches to the streamrip. Since you are unlikely to lose your phone signal most times I assume it will be a bigger feature with the iPod touch since it is wifi only.

Huh? Not the FlyTunes I have, at least I don't see how it could because it is playing a live stream, well almost live with a few seconds of delay for buffering, how could it download something that hasn't happend yet?

I think the Tape Delayed feature will be coming soon when they release the application for the iPhone because it probably isn't possible with just a webpage.

Application on the way?! I'll keep a lookout for that.

If you have an iPhone, try these out:

oldies104.flytunes.fm
comedy104.flytunes.fm
krbx.flytunes.fm

I don't have one but I can assume it works, they do play in my browser because I have quicktime installed.
