FLZ Stunt

Maybe that stunt is phasing out MJ. He be's gettin a little old for this gig.

NO ONE has job security in radio anymore !!!

'Stunt' would imply short-term. This, my friend, is not short-term by any means. FLZ will continue to take a defensive position as long as Hot continues to snipe. I doubt Hot will let up on them anytime soon...the minute they do, FLZ is given an opportunity to take an offensive strategy, and I just don't see that happening.

He has job security in afternoons?
He's been getting smoked in the ratings !

Elvis Duran? Really? We keep going back to the same old fallacy that just because someone is "successful" and on a lot of radio stations, that they're talented at their job, or that people actually WANT to listen to them. The listener doesn't decide what they get to listen to, the broadcast company does... I guarantee you, the people listening to Top 40 radio DO NOT want to hear some (wealthy) middle aged hack like MJ or Elvis Duran... their success is based solely on the fact that they're the chosen ones... I submit to you that we could grab any chump out of a mall parking lot, throw them behind a microphone and they could get ratings comparable to MJ or Elvis...

Matty in the Morning - Kiss Boston. That guy is like 80 (kidding) and is still doing great. Hoyle at APE Jax and Footy at Y100 were a couple examples of people that aged out of CHR. It happens but not to everyone. I think Elvis still gets it...the show drives me nuts but he still has passion for top 40. I think MJ still has passion for radio, but probably not CHR...I do have to give him kudos for trying to reinvent himself as a talk host and hell, for doing two live TALK formatted shows daily (well, one WAS more TALK until last week). That ain't easy...don't care who you are.

Putting a warm body in there and "getting ratings comparable to MJ or Elvis"...yep, that happens all the time. Then again, if a voice tracked morning show can be top 3 in Tampa, guess anything is possible in a PPM world

Yeah, it's easy to think that, but these guys earned their way into those positions and have won big over time. Their shows bill millions of dollars. Why? BECAUSE PEOPLE LISTEN TO THEM.... the ratings, in case you hadn't noticed, count how many people are listening. It's not some mysterious point system with judges. The same sort of thing is true with adult formats. Don Imus (originally a CHR jock, by the way, and in fact one of the greatest of all time) is in his 70's and way past his best days, but he still gets an audience in NY and a few other places, and advertisers still spend on the show, so he's still on the air, and will be until the money stops coming in or he says something stupid again..

MJ's role model might be someone like Jim Quinn in Pittsburgh, who was a legendary CHR jock at KQV and B94 all the way back to the 60's. In the 90's he re-invented himself as a right-wing morning talk show and is one of the highest rated shows in the market, with a small regional syndication package.

FLZ is probably setting the stage for MJ to exit and go to a music-driven morning show. At that point, I wouldn't be at all surprised if his WFLA show expands, maybe to 104.1 in Orlando if they re-tool from Hot Talk to FM News Talk.

How did they earn their way into those positions? They earned their way by doing exactly as they were told by their corporate owners. I'd love to see one of these jocks get on the air and actually do what they want to do, but that will never happen. The only reason that MJ or Elvis Duran are on the air is because they'll play ball with their broadcast company, play the Katy Perry/Lady Gaga/Backstreet Boys and only talk about TMZ grade stories. As I was trying to point out before, the only reason people listen to corporate radio garbage, is because that's all we got. The kids don't know any better, they've never heard of Miles Davis and they probably have no idea what a debt ceiling is... thanks to the braindead morning radio that giant radio companies like CC and Cox push on us... garbage in, garbage out...

As I said in the last post, go into any mall parking lot, pick a person at random, give them the play list that they must play from, and the talking points that they must talk about, and put them in a market with no real competition, they'll get the same numbers as Elvis and MJ...

P.S. same goes for news-talk, look at all the Rush Limbaugh wannabees on the AM dial. Schnitt is the poster-boy for this... his show is practically word for word a recap of Rush's show... he doesn't have an original opinion in that head of his, because he is given talking points by CC (he's gonna sue me for saying that). I have old tapes of the MJ/BJ show, anybody else remember how his politics used to be? People will say anything they have to these days...

How much older was Herb Oscar Anderson than his audience when he did mornings on 77 WABC?

What is so wrong with radio being an escape from all that bullshit? Nobody watches America's Funniest Videos and says "how the hell do these idiots let themselves get kicked in the crotch when children are starving out there?"

Lighten up, bro.
