FM 100 The Fan now local in afternoons

You guys are all wrong about Skinner. He hasn't failed as far as I can remember. Can you tell me when he was fired for cause? It seems to me that he had been let go in budget cuts and format changes. He and Gamble had great numbers at every stop on their career journey. To say his hiring is a mistake is an uninformed opinion. He is one of the better known and more popuar sports talk hosts we've had in the area over the years. It will be a year before The FAN really shows what it can do. Most people don't even know this station exists. Give them time to get in the groove. I was going to say give them time to get their "mojo" working, but that seemed too easy.

To MTHBSTR- It's a fact that Richard Skinner knows his sports. He and Gamble together were a great pair and when they did a recent remote that magic appeared again. You take Mike & Mike In the Morning on 1530 ESPN they are great together. If they each had their own show I don't believe their shows would be as good.

I mentioned before that if you wanted to expand local coverage to put Chambers from 9 to Noon leading up to Rhome. This would give you three local slots between 6 am to 6 pm. That's a plus and the quick easy answer.

However, if I was in charge I would put Skinner and Gamble back together in the morning and move Chambers in the afternoon 3 to 6pm right and if possible team him up with a a former Red or Bengal.

You mentioned that most people don't even know the station exists. And you said give them time to get their groove. First, with the demands of getting revenue from the station you can't start out with people not knowing you don't even exist. What do you say to potential sponsors - be the first to be on a station that most people don't know we even exist. Good luck bringing in revenue that way.

In terms of giving them time to "find their groove." The audience is judging you now and if you don't hook them now how many times will they come back and check you out? There are too many choices out their to get very many chances to try to hook the audience.

No. They are not. They barely have one quarter of their eventual cume now. They need to do a better job of promoting the station. (Opening Day is a fantastic opportunity. Hello FAN promotions!!) It would be great if the Two Angry Guys could reunite, but that apparently is not possible. They have to work with what they have. I think Piecoro would be a good 9 to noon guy. People like what they know. Will Chambers might be a great guy, but he hasn't earned his place yet. Put some well known veterans around him and let him work his way in. He'll get there, but listeners will listen to who they already know. Again, these formats take a long time to build. If they aren't committed enough to give it a year and make it through the lean beginnings, then it won't work.

all this fuss over a 2 share (split 3 ways)--- well heck-- I guess we spend more time talking bout WDJO's (alleged) .4

Sorry for the interruption ---carry on

Real local sports talk if done correctly is a tremendous revenue generator. Just being a local affiliate of a sports network doesn't compare. In NYC WFAN (one of the highest billing stations in the nation) still doubles WEPN (ESPN) (6+). That being said it takes time to build a sports talk station. WFAN didn't do it in a couple of months. Radio One is attempting to "branch out" and do more than a flavor of Urban. They have an all news operation less than a year old in Houston KROI, which had a slow start but still is slowly building audience:

IMHO: If you start any spoken word format, be prepared for at least a year or two of marginal revenue, but done correctly, eventually a cash machine.
