FM 104-1

Word around 10 Columbus Boulevard is that Connecticut broadcasters Red Wolf have entered into an agreement to buy WURH. Red Wolf owns WBMW in Ledyard and WWRX in Pawcatuck. It's all pending FCC approval. That will take the edge off Clear Channel's Stan Priest who's been programming KSS, KC101 and URH. It'll be interesting to see what they'll do...

hopefully they stay alternative and get rid of the goober imaging Todd Thomas was so found of. 'hi, thanks for listening, we sure do appreciate it. we're fm104.1. be sure to thank our music sponsors for bringing you this great music.' what a joke. maybe they will actually put some jox on the air instead of sales or IT people too.

If Red Wolf Goes Cheap, Welcome The WEEI Network or simulcast Jammin' 107.7 .

Oooh, an independently-owned alternative station, if they don't flip it of course. It could be a pretty amazing station if programmed correctly, not cookie-cutter like in the way that Clear Channel likes to program its stations. If I was offered, I'd program it!

Hope they don't flip it to something that CT already has, or to simulcast WEEI. That would be a waste.

Jacko,
Clear channel in some ways was no cookie-cutter. I use the example of 105.1 WTOS FM from maine. It was a great station ripped apart when Blue-Berry broadcasting bought them and changed it to a narrow playlist with voice-tracked Dj's and no request hours in the early summer from Clear channel. TOS had many request hours and a very Rocking funny redneck morning show. (they still do have the morning show) Tos also had a very Broad Playlist 1000+ songs. I would listen to them religiously up in northern VT and skiing Sunday river and in the woods up at Jay facing Maine...
My Best reguards go out to Rev, Rushman and Jessie.

CC's WHRL-Albany, NY has always been a decent Alternative Rocker too...although a much harder edge than WURF, closer to the old WMRQ...

We don't need ANOTHER WEEI simulcast. The majority of this state's population (including the southwest portion of the Hartford market) has more of an affiliation with New York than Boston, and WFAN's booming signal serves just fine. We already have 103.7 and 105.5 in the northern and eastern parts of the state for any desparate Boston sports fans. ;D

I like the idea of a new owner who might keep the format, but tweak the station slightly to liven it up a bit. Let's hope that happens.

Jamie--The TOS of about 10 years ago is a lot different from the TOS that exists today, or even 2 or 3 years ago. In the summer of '99, I was helping a buddy of mine move up to college at the University of Maine in Farmington and we discovered 105 TOS on our way up there and were blown away. They had a wide playlist, and they seemed to not have any desire to play any radio edits whatsoever. We also liked the "voice of God" announcer saying "the mountain of pure rock." I was up there again last year and found the station kind of boring and had a much tighter playlist. My own musical tastes have changed (I prefer alternative stations like WFNX and WEQX these days), so perhaps I'm not judging it as fairly, but you know when a radio station just doesn't sound as good as it used to.

As far as WHRL/Albany goes, I consider them active rock. WHRL is an example of a station that reporting panels, like BDS and Mediabase seem to be having trouble placing since most typical active rockers still play some Led Zeppelin, AC/DC, Guns N' Roses, etc., while WHRL stays pretty much post-1991. However, their currents match very closely to what the active rock chart is rather than the alternative chart, therefore in my eyes, Mediabase has it right by reporting them as active, while BDS needs to get their heads out of you-know-where and report them as active rock as well.

Back to Connecticut, I think that WURH would sounds pretty damn good if it were programmed similar to WFNX, and flood the area with promotions and events.

Dunno about any format changes but Red Wolf is definately hiring so I'd take that as a good sign as far as localization goes. Brian Ram is group PD (3 in CT and 1 in VT). I wonder if an FNX direction would work. It might be "too hip for the room," in Hartford and a rockier direction is already covered pretty well by CCC - maybe a combo of the two, leaning FNX-ish?

Not to highjack my own thread but it's already happened...

Jacko's right about HRL in Albany - more active rock than alternative. CC/Albany's always considered traditional alternative too cool for the market. "Our listeners are not smart enough to get it - they're more Budweiser and gun racks." Mediabase gets it...

TOS heritage goes back to the 70's with a tower on top of Sugarloaf Mtn that covers a huge area. They were radio junkies operating out of a ranch style home on a hill near Skowhegan, ME. Had vinyl albums glued to the ceiling and great radio. Would be nice to see Blueberry slide back to the early days. Bet it would work...

you might be right about Jammin 107.7 or maybe the jocks from Jammin' will be going to FM 104.1 since this was just posted on all access about Jammin hiring. If true the station would not be rock, I would guess not hip hop though but CHR.
