FM antenna array picture.

Regarding the 7-element array on the left side of the pic -- how are the radiators driven, that is, how is energy coupled from the end of each feed cable to the element itself?

What is the vertical spacing of the radiators in wavelengths?

Good Questions Mr. Fry. I don't know yet. This is a new project and was only discovered yesterday.

My hope is to rebuild at the top and avoid the clutter.

BTW, anyone know about this kind of tower? If we find a concrete mixer truck up top, how do we get it down?

Oh, are you calling it a 7 element array because the bottom one isn't aligned with the other goslings? ;D

That plus the power divider appears to have 7 ports, and the construction of the mount on the bottom element is different than the ones above it.

The lowest element also faces a different azimuth bearing, and the vertical spacing from the element above it is not the same as in the the upper 7.

Probably that 1-bay and 7-bay are on different frequencies, and if so, there would be a lot of mutual coupling between the two transmit systems, as well as with the 1-bay Celwave/Phelps-Dodge on the other side of the tower.

This coupling likely would generate and radiate a lot of "spurs" from the site hardware unless the three systems have r-f filters preventing that.

That poor tower sure seems to have a lot of extraneous crap attached to it.

Is it optical illusion or is this horizontal only??

Many FM stations in the edu band are using "slant" polarity to achieve Circular Polarity. Don't know how this would work with this antenna.

Given the age (and horizontal only has not been used by anyone in years) a new 4 bay might be the way to go. Not sure what gain you had with 6 or 7 bays...this may be your concern.

I notice yet another bay horizontal with tuning stubs on 1 5/8 inch innerbay. Looks like it is un connected also.

Looks like a college fm from years gone by. Tower on a hill?m Not nice to show us such a small picture of the site. We need coordinates so we can google it and zoom in...

Actually there is a horizontal only station recently constructed, most likely the only one. KSIQ 96.1 Campo, Ca. They have a verticle only booster in San Diego.

Hmmmmm. Now that's an interesting thought! If a guy wanted to really put signal in a town but had to build the main tower wayyy out there, this might be a good way to keep some isolation between the two towers' signals. Brilliant!

Staff does not allow vertical only stations to be licensed unless there is a Ch 6 in the market and with DTV there should be none. Some question if horizontal only are allowed also. New rules adjustment last year.

Here's the deal with KSIQ in Campo CA. They intentionally built the transmitter site on a signal blocking side of a mountain and went with horizontal pol. They then put up a 700 watt booster on Mt. San Miguel to the east of San Diego vertical pol. They're trying to minimize the interference from the main to the booster. They have also run the main well under licensed power, and are now looking at a 5kW booster from another location. They're trying to get a viable San Diego signal, breaking lots of rules, and all of it to try to flip the station for a profit. Frankly, I hope they go belly up. There's a lot more to this story, but if you do a little research you'll see what Cherry Creek Broadcasting is trying to do while violating numerous rules.
