FM Bandscan, Dumbbell Lake (Lewis County) WA 8/22/22

After 2 months away from the trails, I finally went back into the Cascade Mountains and hiked on this relatively cool Monday. Today I hit Cramer Lake and Dumbbell Lake via the trailhead at the Dog Lake Campground on US-12. Cramer is in Yakima County and Dumbbell is barely into Lewis County, so nothing counts for the local logbook. (I may be back in Lewis County in a couple of weeks, if I have enough money and time to hit the Packwood Flea Market on Labor Day Weekend.) Huckleberries and LOTS of ripe Cascade blueberries are around, especially in the Dumbbell Lake area. I filled a Sterlite container about 2/3rds full of berries. Nice toppings for pancakes, or to crush into a smoothie!
Wildlife: Chipmunks (x2), tons of birds including Mountain Chickadee and what I think was an Osprey (they eat lots of fish, and the lakes are plentiful in this region), baby Cascades Frogs (x2), and Cascades Frog tadpoles (x200+ in one pond!) No big animals except for the sound of one big animal cracking through the woods on the way back (probably deer or elk). No bears.

Pics coming soon. May go on another hike between now and Labor Day, probably in a similar area and probably at a higher elevation (6000+). Being in Yakima now, I no longer have the Teanaway and Snoqualmie areas close for hike travel.

Nice logs! I went over White Pass a couple weeks ago. If you plan on going there, bring bug spray and apply it liberally.

105.5 - You very likely had KCGB. I caught it just west of the summit along US-12. KUKN Longview doesn't come in until around Mossyrock/Morton.

Used bug spray/deet and still got a dozen bites. They are still around, but last month they were ferocious in the Cascades and I refused to hike. At least the berries were worth it! I've had KUKN on summits in the past (including nearby Tumac Mountain, elev. 6350). Cramer Mountain (5900+ feet) directly S blocked a lot of the Portland FMs at the Dumbbell Lake campsites.
