Do you do sw or LW dxing too?

88.7 KUHF Houston...

I sure miss dxing in Houston- lived in Galleria area and moved to Arizona. DXing is not the same! In fact, in comparison with the Gulf it's terrible. I got spoiled with that water path, I have almost lost my desire for it completely since being spoiled with the much better DXing back home. I got the Asians much better and was even able to receive some N African SW stations while I was in Houston and those are practically impossible in Western N America to get now.

No, sorry. I don't have a receiver for short or longwave. The DX here is pretty good on AM given the sheer amount of interference the entire band faces these days. Of course, there are exceptions to the rule. You've got stations transmitting from downtown Houston like 1230 KCOH that have difficulty getting a good signal much past the Loop, let alone out here past the Belt. On the FM side, the Gulf absolutely enhances reception of Beaumont, Corpus Christi, and to an extent San Antonio. Those S.A. FM's are having to travel a little over 200 miles to reach Houston, and ones like 99.5 KISS and 105.3 make appearances most every day. If KISS isn't audible up here on 99.5, it's KNGT Lake Charles LA coming from the other direction. You are absolutely right that the Gulf is directly responsible for that. However, gar Fla and I are having a conversation in another thread that shows what the Gulf giveth, the Gulf can taketh. In the last few months, he's lost his excellent WWL reception from the Tampa area, while I've lost a noticeable amount of strength from the border's powerhouse, KVNS.
