FM Dx catches today

Driving out near Greenfield today got Cities 97.1 and Minnesota 97.5 clear as a bell. Think I got 98.1 from K.C. too but never heard an ID.

Thunderstorm activity can come into play with FM "dx"......A dense, humid atmosphere seems to be a contributing factor......
As a general rule, IF thunderstorms affect FM reception, the storm is USUALLY mid-way between the transmission and reception points. So if you picked up Minnesota in MA, the storm line was likely around western NY.
NOTE: This is NOT "etched-in-stone" scientific fact...but I have personally witnessed this strange weather effect several times over the years....on the ham bands as well as commercial broadcast frequencies.

A couple nights ago, a friend of mine near Albany got stations from Tampa and said it seemed to move northwest as the evening went on. I helped him log WKZU 104.9 in Iuka, MS. "The area where MS, TN, and AL meet is Kudzu country!" He wasn't familiar with kudzu and couldn't figure out what it was saying at first. I guess that's not surprising since kudzu has mostly taken hold in Arkansas and further southeast.

He also logged KBFC 93.5 out of Forrest City, AR, KZLE 93.1 Batesville, AR, WQST-FM 92.5 Forest/Jackson, MS, and WLRJ 104.7 Greenville, MS. As he mentioned hearing urban on 97.1 and hot AC/Top-40 on 99.7 around the same time, he most likely also got WHRK and WMC-FM. He said he got a country station on 98.1. Only one I can think of there is WRAY-FM out of Indiana.

He said it lasted about 2 1/2 hours, and the distant stations were gone very suddenly. He first started noticing them after a Tampa station started overpowering a local translator he was listening to.

I actually went to Portland, Maine in July 2nd-3rd and while I tried to do a simple bandscan there when little did I know recorded in the middle of e-skip session when I heard Minnesota or Iowa mentioned, somewhere in those areas when I caught it on camera in my friend's truck at a parking lot when three different stations especially in 96.7 was coming in and out.

Several years ago...I was about 45 miles north of Albany, NY...and tuned in what should have been local Classic Rock station 106.5-WPYX a full Class B FM. However as I listened...I discovered that I was actually listening to KFMC instead...A Classic Rock station from Fairmont, MN...This was on a Sony Walkman at the time...
