Friday, I was driving back from Lafayette area...and was listening to RED 93.7 out of New Iberia/Baton Rouge..then suddenly the band shifted and I thought maybe the Arrow was coming in...but then I realized it wasnt a classic rock song....hmmm no, it wasnt RED (which has a Jack style format)...finally heard a sweeper for 93.7 KRQ.....hmmm new one on me...so I got home and looked it up...Tucson AZ!!! WOW!!! hadnt heard that one before.....gotta let their Chief Egr know about this!Of course, the 6mtr ham band is open as well....and it still is today....so fire up the radios and see what DX you can get on the FM band (if you can ;)Enjoy...

Last night, around 10:00 PM, WYNK 101.5 Baton Rouge was coming in like a local on the Katy Fwy as I was driving between Katy and the West Loop. Also, 93.7 & 106.9 were getting SLAMMED by out-of-town stations. Luckily for the digital signals, I had no problems as soon as it kicked in.Steven.

Speaking of dx'n last weekend I was picking up Tampa Florida radio over KTXN Victoria! I couldnt believe it. It was Wild 98.7 I think it was, this weekend I was picking up Shreveport radio stations, but keep in mind I'm using a 12 element FM high gain fm antenna about 20' up in the air out in Lavaca county.

WOW!! Wild 98.7 (WLLD) isn't even that powerful and has some signal issues locally. In Tampa, the farthest I could pick up this weekend was Magic 101.9 in New Orleans, and that was just in the car. Nice to listen to something different.

I was wondering if any one knew of where I was picking up sounded like smooth jazz that night? on 98.5 I tried to get a call sign at the toh but it went out about that time.

You weren't alone CW.. I also heard KRQ 93.7 from Tucson on Fri. evening around 7 p.m. I was actually NW of Houston near Navasota. That was some massive tropo that night... With that said, I have heard FM stations from Tucson at least once before while just outside Houston. Must be the right spacing or something for the signal to duct through..

More than likely what caused the Arizona skip was a Sporadic E event, not tropo. Tropo is usually limited to a few hundred miles. In a Sporadic-E event, portions of the e-layer of the atmosphere become ionized, like a giant mirror, causing skip for a thousand miles or more. Sporadic E usually only last a few minutes from any one location, as the ionization will move. A duct from a tropo event can typically stay in place for hours at a time.Another clue that it was sporadic E was that the station was strong enough to overpower KKWR. Tropo signals, although they last longer, typically are not as strong as sporadic E signals. So, in a tropo event, it is more likely that you will hear multiple stations on a single frequency, while a sporadic E signal will be a dominate signal on a frequency.About 25 years ago, I got some Sporadic E from Arizona, then the event moved north. As the stations from Arizona faded out, I picked up stations from Nevada, Utah, then Idaho. In another event, I received sporadic E from Michigan, then as the cloud moved east, picked up Toronto and upstate NY.If you are interested in dxing, a good primer can be found here.http://www.dxing.com/tvfmdx.htm
