FM DXing from Misquamicut

Kenny, you might be able to help here, as I think you might be from the area. Quick question: Which stations are regularly audible from the Misquamicut area? It has been some time since I have been there. Which Long Island stations are clear, even without tropo? For example, is 92.1 WLNG normally clear? How about the WEHM simulcast?

Thanks in advance.

Sorry, Scott. Not any more.I did like listening to 92.1 WLNG on my way down to WESTERLY but I have not been down that area in at least 2 years. Is WLNG still oldies? I thought they became more current as in 80's.

WLNG has been adding in more 80s music, and a select few newer than that (Santana/Rob Thomas - Smooth, Los Lonely Boys - How Far Is Heaven, etc) but they still play all the older 50s/60s stuff as well, unlike stations like B101.

The last time I heard WLNG (last year), they still were very much live and local. They played a few 80s tunes here and there, but they were the exception rather than the rule. The focus of their music was still the 50s and 60s.

That's still how WLNG operates.

The Montauk stations are no problem in the Misquamicut/Watch Hill area (WJJF 94.9 and WELJ 104.7.) I can also get WEHN 96.9 East Hampton no problem. Of course all of the New London market stations are locals there, and you can pull in the NYC AMs very nicely with that straight salt water path to the city.

Thanks for the info. I have heard that it is possible for WNOW to take over 92 PRO-FM and for New Jersey 101.5 to overtake B-101. I would imagine, however, that this is something that occurs only during tropo.

I remember driving through the Misquamicut Beach area one night and as I slowed down at a stop light Pro-FM faded out and K-Rock New York came in. Not tropo either. This is how I made sure. There was absolutely no traffic on the road. It was one of those late night drives where nobody was around. So I inched along very slowly and Pro-FM's signal returned. Then I actually backed up again at that same stop light and K-Rock returned. I did this about 3 times. If it was tropo I wouldn't of had this result. It actually seems that I hit a dead spot in Pro-FM's signal or a very strong spot in K-Rocks. Either way there are a few spots in that area that for whatever reason actually receive 92.3 in New York.

A similar thing happens if you drive to Hammonasset Beach State Park in Madison, Connecticut. Tune into 94.1. Then park in the lot overlooking the water. I did this several times during daylight hours. Inch your car one way or another and you will alternate between WHJY Providence and 94.1 in Philly. That isn't tropo either. It just happens to be one of those sweet spots where you get a nice surprise.

In both cases, that nice long clear path of water on Long Island sound is an excellent conductor for radio signals and keeps them strong. I'm sure that is the only reason Ive had these two experiences with both 92.3 and 94.1. All that water really helps.

It is always hard for me to tell when tropo is in effect, especially because it is summer whenever I am in the Misquamicut area. The last time I was there, 92 PRO-FM and Now fought it out. There seemed to be no other hint of tropo all over the FM dial.

In terms of your DXing from Madison, CT: That would seem an ideal spot to DX on 94.1. It tests the reaches of 94 'HJY's signal, and Philly's 94.1 is probably the next closest strong signal on that dial position.

Next time, from that same location at Misquamicut, try 95.5. If WBRU and WPLJ are duking it out (with 'PLJ perhaps being the winner), then it's likely it is not tropo conditions.

Jacko
