FM frequency of the week - 100.9 MHz

What can you get on 100.9?
Here in Vermilion, OH 100.9 is WMJK/Clyde, OH 'Coast Country 100.9' that was once a classic rock station until Jan. 5, 2009 when BAS Broadcasting flipped them to country after some weekend stunting with a bunch of songs like 'Goodbye Yellow Brick Road' the 'N SYNC 'Bye Bye Bye' and Sheryl Crow 'Change Will Do Ya Good' and a bunch of others.

43 miles NW of WRIF 101.1, I could put WRIF in a null from an Antennacraft/Archer FM-10 and get 3 kW WBRN-FM 100.9 Big Rapids, MI, regularly, 100 miles away before WFXZ (now WLUN) 100.9 Pinconning came on the air. WIXX 101.1 Green Bay, about 240 miles away would also come in quite regularly with the same antenna bearing. 240 miles was about the practical limit for somewhat regular stations in the 50 kW-100 kW range. I also got the Clyde, OH 100.9 station. quite a bit with tropo.

From my location, 100.9 IIRC was the last FM frequency that I finally DXed a station on....the one in Pana, IL if memory serves (E-skip), in the late 90s maybe.

100.9 would be a wonderful open freq if not for Y-100's I-Block.

From Coldwater, MI-

WBNO- Bryan, OH- Classic Hits- The dominant station here. Probably about 90/10 with...
WQXC- Allegan, MI- Oldies- 'Cool 101'- Strong local tropo brings this one in a little more than 10 percent of the time.

Tropo-
WWBR- Big Rapids, MI- Country- Big Country
WPGW- Portland, IN- Country- Jay 101
WLUN- Pinconning, MI- Sports/ESPN- The Loon
WMJK- Clyde, OH- Coast Country
CBC Radio 2- Wingham, ON

From Manassas., VA,

It's usually the IBOC hash from DC's 101.1. When it's off, on the Sony HD tuner, it's Top 40 WHTI 100.9 from Richmond about 90 miles away.
I once got KHLL 100.9 "The Hill" from Richwood, LA with the contemporary Christian music during E skip.

In Durham, North Carolina, it's usually WSTS from Fairmont, NC (~150 miles SE on the NC/SC border), which is usually unaffected by IBOC hash from next-door WRVA-FM 100.7 in Wake Forest, NC. I've also picked up Quanah, TX's KIXC and Clay Center, KS' KCLY via e-skip.

All I have ever received here in NE Illinois is WQFL Rockford, IL and what was then WIVQ Peru, IL...
I should try for the Big Rapids, MI station when Tropo is strong from the Grand Rapids area...

From here in Schenectady, WKLI-FM 100.9 (now running an Active Rock format, formerly Variety Hits and before that, Soft AC), licensed to Albany, NY dominates the frequency here... I should try for WKRL-FM (Syracuse) or WRNX (Amherst, MA) next time WKLI goes off the air...

Bothell/Bellevue, WA: KKWF IBOC. No DX heard here

Pacific Beach, WA: KPLU 88.5's translator in Aberdeen. Good range on the N Beach.

Yakima, WA: Local KARY 100.9 Grandview, WA (Oldies).

Portland, OR: KXL 101.1 bleed.

-crainbebo

Dayton,OH area: With WEEC blasting on 100.7 not much, however when Hurricane Ike remnants blew down the power grid and took WEEC down for a couple of days I logged WXIZ in Waverly, OH and WBNO, Bryan, OH. WEEC being off brought a rare opportunity to hear WMMS on 100.7 in the SW part of the state.

Just sideband noise from KUFO/KXL (or whatever Paul's calling it this week.) Anything else that might be lurking on that frequency is pretty much stomped out by the loudmouthed right-wing extremist wackos that now populate 101.1. Oi.

Nothin on 100.9, freq is stomped on my local WZLX 100.7about 30 mi and out of market but solid WGIR 101.1 Manchester NH at about 60 mi.

In Saratoga Springs NY...Local Rock station WKLI Albany dominates the frequency...but when they are off the air...It is possible to DX Country station WWFY Berlin, Vt and Rock station WKRL Syracuse, NY....

Near Farmville, Virginia:

Antenna aimed east: WHTI 100.9, Lakeside/Richmond, VA (Hot 100.9)
Antenna aimed west: WIQO 100.9, Forest, VA (93.7 KHF) - Very faint signal.
