FM Frequency of the Week: 101.5

East Tenessee: WQUT, Johnson City, TN can be heard in the car almost everywhere in the market. There was a translator on 101.5 for a couple of years, but it mostly got wiped out by WQUT.

Retro/other: Dayton, OH area: Now the home of WCLI, Enon after the former WKSW 101.7, Urbana was tower-danced into the market. Before that, it was a translator for WSWO-LP for a time. When empty, it was either WKKG, Columbus, IN, or at the time, one of two 101.5 The Rivers, WRVF Toledo or what is now WXBW, Gallipolis OH.

The RDS on the radio rotates between KEMJ : -) then KEMJ :-D
I have to hit info on the radio to see what song it is
 
South Mississippi:

WYNK Baton Rouge, LA (country)
WTKX Pensacola, FL "TK101" (rock)
and also KNUE Tyler, TX (country) came in one time.
 
15 miles south of Orlando. WPOI St. Petersburg. Pretty good signal. Used to be better before a translator in Orlando W268CT (WTLN 990) came on. WPOI is perfectly usable while stationary. If in the car, occasionally the translater will pop up.

Emoji? They're really starting to run out of station names.

This is a totally blank channel where I live.
 
From the southwest suburbs of Chicago:

Here's a great example of LPFMs getting in the way of a station I could receive and occasionally listen to. In one spot in the house, where I just happened to have an Akai AT-V04, 50kW WBNQ Bloomington, Ill., was usually in with a fine stereo signal and a fun rock format. 104 miles as the signal flies. Occasionally WSBT South Bend, Ind., or WIBA Madison, Wis. would waft in.

Then LPFM happened. Now 101.5 is one of two translators on any FM radio, depending on all the usual low-power variables: W268CY Tinley Park (relaying WWHN 1510 Joliet) or W268AY Chicago (which was relaying WMBI 1110 Chicago). I will now go outside and yell at a cloud.

I have heard both LPFMs at my location thanks to outdoor FM antenna with a rotor. However W268AY is easily heard on a simple portable radio as well. I am sure broadcasting from the John Hancock Center helps them out.
 
Here in Canyon Lake, Texas it is primarily 101X (KROX) from Buda/Austin. During tropo, 101.5 from Nuevo Laredo or the Valley will make an appearance. From 1995-1998, 101X from a tower around Bastrop was a local.

Are you talking LPFMs or translaators?
 
Both are translators.
 
Technically, translators. I lump them in the same pile, low-power pests compared to full-power outlets. Good for the log, not so much for listening.

That was my favorite station when I used to visit New Jersey from Florida from the late 90's until my last visit in 2013.

They used to have a translator station for covering extreme south Jersey on 97.3 FM and one time when I took the coastal route back to Florida through the Delmarva in 1999, I could still hear them on 97.3 when I crossed the Virginia state line but it was gone soon after that.

Don't know if there was any tropo involved or not.
 
From the suburbs west of Detroit, MI:

Before translators took over the band WLQR-FM (Now WRVF) Toledo, OH used to be in the clear and easy to receive, even indoors on portable radios.

Now: W268CN exists and dominates the frequency throughout much of the Detroit metro area. However WRVF will still capture the receiver if I point my yagi southward. ~50 miles.
 
Central Kansas:
A moderate to weak signal from KMKF/Manhattan. I have received KROR/Hastings before only once, as well as the former KSLS/Liberal (now KSMM-FM) - have not received KIKS/Iola yet.

North Iowa:
Occasional visits from KEMJ/Fairmont or KKSI/Eddyville - both tend to be very weak.
