FM Frequency of the Week - 102.1 MHz

What do you all get on 102.1 FM?

Here in Vermilion, OH, it is local WDOK/Cleveland with a CHR leaning AC format. During tropo I have heard WMUK/Kalamazoo, MI underneath and even took over once during a temperature inversion.

from south Florida:

WKLG Rock Harbor (Key Largo), FL---which I joke about on the Miami boards.

Also in the Miami-Ft. Lauderdale area are a couple of pirates.

If not for these above, 102.1 would be wide wide open (except for WMBX 102.3 IBOC when the antenna is due north).

There's Mix 102 in Freeport, Bahamas---I think they claim 5 kW, but I have only heard it once at home, and it took effort. Maybe they use a longwire or something. :)

Northern VA,

At most times I could hear very weak WRXL Richmond with an alternative rock format even with DC's WMMJ 102.3's IBOC, and this is with a Tecsun DSP radio when I use its whip antenna to find a spot to hear it. On "regular" radios it's nothing. Previous tropo events I logged in Philly's WIOQ and Virginia Beach's 102.1 The Game with its class A signal.

Extremely fertile frequency. In Bothell, KPQ Wenatchee, WA came in any day from about 90 miles. KSWW Aberdeen, WA has also been caught as a tropo catch. Have also received KPRI San Diego, CA and KTRA Farmington, NM via Es.

In Pacific Beach, WA this was KSWW Aberdeen.

In Portland, OR it's splatter from KINK 101.9.

In Yakima, WA it's KPQ, blasting in like a local.

In Durham, North Carolina, 102.1 MHz is WJMH, Reidsville, NC 99.9 percent of the time. I've logged WMXT from Pamplico, SC, on more than one occasion and even logged Kalamazoo, MI's WMUK once.

Mostly WIMT T-102, Lima's Country powerhouse. I've heard WDNL, Danville IL and once grabbed WWST Star 102.1 Sevierville (Knoxville) TN from Xenia OH one hot summer day. The ads for Dollywood and recognizing voices from being there helped. Of course when I've been in Knoxville and environs, WWST is a local and have not heard anything else from there.

From suburban Rochester NY, it's class A WJCA Albion NY, a religious repeater (Jimmy Swaggart's network out of Baton Rouge) about 25 miles west of here. It blocks out CFNY ("102.1 the Edge") from Toronto, which is still quite audible here when WJCA is off the air.

From Coldwater, MI-

A very strong WMUK- Kalamazoo, MI with NPR programming. However WIMT- Lima, OH will make it in during tropo openings.

I've also heard..
WDOK- Cleveland, OH
WDNL- Danville, IL
WLUM- Milwaukee, WI
CFNY- Brampton, ON
WLEW- Bad Axe, MI

And even WKLG from Florida via Es!

Lawppy, on the last one, ya got my sympathy.

I even thought WKLG was a very jacked up station. They went from an oldies song into George Michael's 'Monkey' with no ID in between. If not for yes.com (yes, WKLG IS listed there) I would have never ID'ed it.

Crazy formatted station. Reminds me of one I have here in southern Michigan. But you don't expect it in south Florida.

It comes across to me as more of a "legal pirate FM", or a work project of sorts. I was surprised that it's on Yes.com

They have had their share of off-air time....was able to bag a few 102.1's on E-skip last year, thanks to them....

A few months ago they added some newer stuff, I'd say up to 2010....but I'm not even sure the newer stuff is even played now. No, I don't listen much.

Sorry for the OT, folks.

cd

Sideband of KINK mixing with the sideband of K272EL (simulcast of KEX). The KINK sideband usually walks on the K272 sideband, being the more powerful of the two.

Philly's WIOQ...

Maybe next time the FM of the week won't be a Philly FM.

Baldwin County, AL here, it's a bit mushy most of the time as we're split between two near-distant stations. Even though it's 10 miles closer the rarer of the two is WQUA "SonLife Radio" licensed to Citronelle in northwest Mobile County. It mostly covers cows and trees and I rarely seem to hear it Mobile city despite being only 20 miles out.

The more common catch is WWAV "The Wave" from the FWB / Santa Rosa Beach, FL area. It's about 75 miles from me.

For whatever reason these are the only two things I seem to hear on this frequency 99% of the time, even during openings.
