FM Frequency of the Week: 102.9

Wilmington, Delaware

Classic Rock WMGK Philadelphia with excellent reception. On rare occasions WOWI in Hampton Roads overrode it during TROPO conditions. Hearing HIP-HOP on 102.9 alerted me of either a format change or crazy reception issues,

East Tennessee: Knoxville area. Much, but not all of town, W275AD, Knoxville (tower more like Seymour) which is one of WDVX-89.9's translators. A few miles down the road in n Sevierville is W275BP, relaying WJFC, Jefferson, City. Clingman's Dome brought WDUN-FM, Clarkesville, GA.

Retro/other: Most of Western Ohio including Dayton, WDHT, Urbana (formerly WING-FM, WAZU and WBLY-FM) I'd heard that signal as far away as Fort Wayne, Indianapolis and Lafayette, IN (until the Delphi allocation fired up as WNJY). In the absence of Delphi (and sometimes with it), it was still possible to get WSOY-FM, Decatur, IL.

From the southwest suburbs of Chicago:

Only one, pre-IBOC, on 102.9: WBCS Milwaukee, in stereo, on 7/3/1990. Impossible to get anything now with 103.1 IBOC in place.

I'm not much the FM DXer -- maybe 100 heard here in 20 years -- but WMGK Philly and their Bon Jovi of Your Life classic rock is a steady listen when driving downhill.
You get south of Pottsville on the map, and the terrain slides inexorably into Chesapeake Bay.
This place is 1/4 inch north of Pottsville on the map (upper left corner).

Hartland, VT:

Two classic rock stations battling it out yesterday afternoon (11/29), both only readable in brief bursts. I'm assuming they were WDRC-FM Hartford, CT, and WBLM Portland, ME, but couldn't get an ID on either in about 10 minutes of listening in a parked car. This frequency is usually empty here, but we had slightly enhanced conditions with marginal deep fringe signals popping up all over the dial.

Central Kansas:
Strong signal from KHUT/Hutchinson.

North Central Iowa:
Weak to sometimes moderate signal from KZIA/Cedar Rapids; KTFC/Sioux Rapids will occasionally sneak in, and received KMNB/Minneapolis only once.

Rochester NY: usually somewhat reliable signal from WMHR Syracuse NY, 70 miles east. (Their satellite station WMHN 89.3 Webster-Rochester started out picking it up over the air.)

At the lake house (14 miles dead south of Aitkin, MN)

KMNB Minneapolis (at 93 miles away) Country
It helps when you have a giant lake to the south of you so the Minneapolis stations can come in pretty well most of the time
