FM Frequency of the Week: 104.1

East Tennessee: W281BQ, translator for WSEV, "Watson 104.1" covering Sevier County and still audible in parts of Knox. DX catches are WCLE, Calhoun (Cleveland) TN, and WALR, Palmetto (Atlanta) GA.

Retro/other: Western Ohio. WLBC-FM, Muncie, IN, where I used to hear Drake-Chenault's "Solid Gold" in the 70s. At that time, WLBC-FM signed off at midnight and occasionally WVGR, Grand Rapids MI would make it in.

Let me first make this statement (for the record), I hate LP-FM. It ruins the hobby of DXing. I would have no issue with them if they turned them off for half the day (or on weekends).

San Jose--K281BL-FM is a low power FM (250 watts) Air 1 signal on 104.1 flooding the valley.

Mario..Back in the day ( late 1980s), I use to sit in our backyard and wait for the planes to fly over so KHKK can bounce off the planes and into the south bay. The radio (Soundesign 4628BLK) wasn't the greatest, but I was able to briefly hear KHKK (then it was urban /dance) when a plane flew over Mount Hamilton. With today's radios, I'm sure if K281BL/Air 1 wasn't spewing that religious signal all over the valley, I could hear KHKK.

Wilmington Delaware

A strong signal from translator W281CM that signed on a year ago. It is blasting Hispanic music in my direction from South Jersey. It splatters onto 103.9 and 104.3. Before it signed on I could occasionally hear WPRS in Waldorf MD and WCXL in Kill Devil Hills NC.
I share formula72's frustration as to these translators ruining DX opportunities.

Central North Carolina:

A weak signal comes in from WTQR "Q104.1" in Winston-Salem, NC. Despite being 100,000 watts, it's much harder for me to pick up than the other 100,000 watt stations in the Greensboro/Winston-Salem market. The transmitter location is closer to Mt. Airy and the Virginia border than it is to Winston-Salem, putting it further away and making it harder to pick up.

Central Kansas:
Moderate to weak signal from K281CD/Newton. Before it moved to 104.1 circa 2015, it was on 93.5 (where KDGS just down the road in Andover now resides). Never received any other stations prior.

North Iowa:
Mostly second channel adjacent bleedover from KLKK/Clear Lake, but can eek in KOEZ/Ames depending on antenna positioning (have never received KZJK/St. Louis Park, and would only receive WNAX-FM/Yankton during certain DXing conditions).

Hartland, VT:
W281AU, Keene, NH, with Christmas music, but still IDing as "Keene's True Oldies." Surprising range for a 250-watt translator relaying the HD3 of WKNE-FM 103.7.

Meriden, CT:
WMRQ-FM Hartford, alternative rock from West Peak (aka Meriden Mountain).

Local KXDD Yakima (country, about 10 miles away at 100,000 watts).

South Mississippi:

KVDU Houma/New Orleans - 104.1 The Spot (adult hits)
WDLT Saraland, AL (urban AC) sometimes comes in
KRBE Houston (CHR) once came in during tropo conditions.

At the lake house (14 miles dead south of Aitkin, MN)

KZJK Minneapolis (at 93 miles away) "Jack Fm"
It helps when you have a giant lake to the south of you so the Minneapolis stations can come in pretty well most of the time
