FM Frequency of the week: 105.3

nd2023

Banned
What have you heard on 105.3?

For me, it's a weak local WDAS, which I never listen to.
When the tropo hits, it's Party 105.3 WDRE from Long Island, which is one of my favorite stations
I once got Magic 105.3 from San Antonio, TX all the way in Mobile, AL on tropo! That beat my previous tropo record of getting CKWM 94.9 from Nova Scotia in Long Island.

At home, I get KHOV-FM, Wickenburg, but, if I go a short distance from here, I can get KZLZ, Kearny. Both of these are line-of-sight catches.

This frequency has always been splatter for me in most places I've been or lived in. The only exceptions were WKBU in New Orleans (not sure if I have the calls right) and local CISS here in Ottawa.

From Coldwater, MI:

We have a weak semi-local (WKHM-Brooklyn) on 105.3. It's only 30 miles away, but it certainly doesn't seem like it. WKHM is no match for farther away, but much stronger WHTS-Coopersville. Both stations duke it out around here with WKHM barely having the upper-hand.

Other stations I have heard on 105.3

WKOA- Lafayette, IN
WYHT- Mansfield, OH
CFCA- Kitchener, ON
WFZH- Mukwonago, WI
KYBA- Stewartsville, MN- During the intense July '06 tropo event
KELR- Charliton, IA- During the August '07 tropo
KLYV- Dubuque, IA- Same day, different station
WOVO- Glasgow, KY

In Charleston, the 105.3 signal is usually splatter from our local 105.5, The Bridge. However, when The Bridge is off the air, I usually pick up the eclectic AAA sounds of WRHQ, Richmond Hill-Savannah.

The old WAGI sometimes came in when it was still in Gaffney.

Until 2001, our local 105.5 was on 105.3, and that came in on this frequency.

In Durham, NC, the former WAGI (now WNOW-FM) has been coming in faintly but more noticeably now that Durham-licensed WDCG 105.1 moved their antenna and dropped their power from 100kw to 78kw. I've also received Portsmouth, VA's WKUS "105.3 Kiss FM" before and, at least once, Fair Bluff, NC's WODR.

Local CFXY Fredericton, NB. The Fox....78,000 watts of endless Nickelback.

Here in the Boston area, 105.3 is two pirates.

The predominant one "Vibe 105.3" covers metro Boston from the urban neighborhood Dorchester, south of Boston proper. Reggae/Calypso/Caribbean format. Out of over a dozen pirates around Boston (AM and FM combined), this is the only one in HD IBOC with full RDS display.

Immediately north of Boston proper in Chelsea, MA there's another pirate on 105.3 with a mellow "smooth" Caribbean jazz music format.

Before the pirates existed, a good receiver in certain locations around Boston especially along the coast or on the North Shore could get Classic Rock WSHK "The Shark" from Kittery, ME.

rough frequency here with 25kw WYZB 3 miles away.
But almost daily tropo brings in WWL-FM New Orleans at 200 miles, usually quite strong.

Several years ago, I got that same station here in Memphis via tropo on my car radio. Hit in scan driving down Mt. Moriah road. 625 miles +/-.

Of course, that path down into Texas is pretty common here.

We have locals on 105.1 and 105.5, so 105.3 is tough to get. I have logged short tropo to KFBZ/Haysville, KS to KJML/Columbus, KS in that time.

Prior to both stations' existence, my best tropo on 105.3 was WKOA/Lafayette, Indiana (from Lawrence, KS) and my best e-skip was WFRB/Frostburg, Maryland (from Topeka, KS).

105.3 used to be a nice DX channel here in the Hudson Valley, New York. Normal reception was relatively weak WYCY in Hawley, Pa. Tropo would bring in WDAS Philly often very strong, WEBK from Killington, Vt, occasionally WDRE Party-105.3 from Long Island. Also logged during the past 5 years, WGKR-Grand Gorge, NY, not very far, but very difficult, WKPQ-Hornell, NY "Freedom 105", WSVY Norfolk, Va "Vibe 105", plus three from Canada: CFCA-Kitchener "Cool FM", CKBY-Ottawa "Y-105", and (once on e-skip) CKTG-Thunder Bay "The Giant".

Also on E-Skip: Most distant, KLLI-Dallas "Live 105" at 1414 miles. Others heard via e-skip include: WDBT-Alabama, WYKS-Florida, WBZY and WSTI-Georgia, WGVY-Minnesota, and KZNN-Missouri.

Last year a local religious translator moved from 105.7 to 105.3, changing their tower location, and at the same time raising their tower height, and now block 105.3. At least I can now DX on 105.7.

There was discussion about what WNOW-FM is going to do on the Charlotte board. They want a tower closer to Charlotte but there's a problem with getting it. Now, apparently their CP is for a taller tower in a different location.

So you might get an even stronger signal.

I've been hearing G-105 for years, not that it's any big deal.

In my motel room in Myrtle Beach, I've always been amazed at how clear WODR is, because most inland stations don't do too well.

Sideband of KRSK, "Rosie (or "Rosey", depending on whom you ask) 105".

In Bothell/Bellevue/Pacific Beach, WA 105.3 is KCMS Edmonds, WA [Christian Contemporary, owned by Crista].

In Portland, OR I get KRSK Portland's IBOC.

In Yakima I get KONA Pasco, WA, staticky at 65 mi. Townsquare Media took off the only AC in Yakima [KQMY-99.3] and replaced it with KIT News/Talk. Bad choice Townsquare. How can office workers listen to "office music" over a radio? A horrible-sounding KONA is the only ticket out, and all offices need to have a superior radio for that, not a Coby Boombox.

I forgot to mention WNOW-FM is Regional Mexican.

Schenectady, NY - often it's static, but there is a translator W287AB which rarely comes in (it's relaying 91.7 WFRH which is a first-adjacent away from the stronger WRPI) and I think is off most of the time... I can often get WJEN (105.3 The Cat country station in Rutland, VT) during DX times :)
