FM Frequency of the Week - 106.5 MHz

What can you get on 106.5 FM?

Here in Vermilion, OH it is local WHLK/Cleveland, OH '106.5 the Lake' which has been a Jack-FM type of 'we play anything' station since Jan 2011. Prior to that it was 'Mix 106.5' a Hot-AC station. When tropo is up, I can null them out enough to hear WVFM/Kalamazoo, MI. On travels to Columbus, OH I have heard WDSJ/Greenville, OH south of Mansfield flip flopping with Cleveland's 106.5.

From Warminster PA(Philadelphia area):

Semi-local WBBO from Bass River Twp., NJ(the former 106.3 WSLT and WKOE in Ocean City, NJ)

Northern VA,

Strong IBOC from local WJFK 106.7. With a Tecsun PL-390, I could find a spot with the whip antenna to hear Baltimore's WWMX 106.5. One tropo event, I once heard WSFL 106.5 from New Bern, NC and WBTJ 106.5 Richmond, before the HD is used.

Normally, I can hear WYTE Marshfield, WI "Y 106.5" with its C/W format from 188 miles away, KLFN Sunburg, MN "The Train" from 167 miles away, and KFMC, which brands itself based on its call letters with a classic rock format from 241 miles. All these stations are weak but not so much as to not be there consistently.

Other stations I have received on 106.5:

106.5 W293AV MN Hinckley 60 08/22/07 0330 Tr 55W !
106.5 KRJB MN Ada 202 07/14/08 0236 Tr “R & J Broadcasting Network”
106.5 WHBZ WI Sheboygan Falls 306 07/16/06 1700 Tr Very weird R (Partial)
106.5 KCQQ IA Davenport 365 07/14/11 1050 Tr Classic Rock Q106.5
106.5 WDAF MO Liberty 542 07/31/11 2010 Tr Partial RDS Decode
106.5 WARH IL Granite City 574 08/04/11 0016 Tr
106.5 KBVA AR Bella Vista 731 08/26/11 0300 Tr Calls R
106.5 KELD AR Hampton 913 07/10/08 1404 Es C3 Calls
106.5 WEND NC Salisbury 979 06/02/10 1855 Es
106.5 WBTJ VA Richmond 981 07/15/06 1923 Es
106.5 KQXL LA New Roads 1116 06/18/10 2007 Es
106.5 KOVE TX Galveston 1215 06/18/10 1831 Es
106.5 WOKV FL Ponte Vedra Beach 1275 06/18/10 2005 Es

Semi-local WAVH licensed to Daphne, Alabama is on 106.5. It's one of the few stations to actually transmit from Mobile-proper so it's one of the weaker signals for me in this market, being nearly 40 miles away.

As such, during intense tropo, it's not unusual for it to get over-ridden with "Hitz 106" WOCY Carabelle, Florida, about 170 miles to my east. KQXL New Roads, Louisiana also sounds familiar but I don't know for sure if I've logged it before or not.

In Bellingham, WA it's local KWPZ Lynden, WA. Excellent 68,000 watt signal clear to Seattle and Vancouver, BC. Practically causes smoke to come out of any receiver tuned into it in Bellingham.

High Bridge NJ - This is an interesting freq here. The top station would be WBBO down the Jersey Shore, then WWMX Baltimore MD, then Bloomsburg PA (is it WFTE or something like that, although I still think of them as WHLM, hi!). Rare tropo will bring Richmond VA in, or WSFL from New Bern NC.

In the 90's both WWMX and WHLM on 106.5 used the "Mix 106" moniker. You could drive from Williamsport Pa to DC and never lose the frequency. WHLM changed to WFYY in 2001. The former WCNR at 930 was bought in 2002 and they used the WHLM calls. WKAB at 103.5 was bought by the same company in 2006 and they switched to WHLM-FM.

To this day there is still confusion with the call letters, and this is going on 12 years!

If I'm in South Lake County, IN, it's possible to get WXNU St. Anne, IL. Otherwise, I get buzzsaws from 1st adjacent WSRB Lansing, IL on 106.3.

Usually it's All News 106.5. If I go 20-25 miles up the road it's usually WSKZ 106.5 Chattanooga,Tennessee
