FM Frequency of The Week: 106.9

What have you picked up on 106.9?

For me, in Bothell
KRWM Bellevue, WA (local, AC)

Yakima, WA
KMOK Lewiston, ID (Country)

-crainbebo

In the LA area: Nothing besides local KROQ 106.7 IBOC.

For me, in northern VA,

WJFK 106.7 IBLOCK interference. With a Tecsun DSP radio, I can position the antenna to get WARX 106.9, a classic hits station near Hagerstown, MD. Tropo openings have given me WAFX 106.9 out of Suffolk, VA, near Norfolk, also classic hits.

In pennsauken it is local 106.9 WKDN less than 5 miles away. this is the strongest signal at my location. no dxing here

Interesting frequency here in the Rochester, NY suburbs. It used to be owned by the 106.9 in Auburn NY, which was WPCX and then WHCD and eventually WPHR, and which threw a huge signal at Rochester from about 50 miles to the east. But Clear Channel moved it last year, downgrading it from B to B1, relicensing it to Solvay and moving the transmitter to the Onondaga Community College campus near Syracuse. Now it rarely reaches to Rochester at all, leaving the frequency open for...

...IBOC sidebands from local WKGS 106.7...

...which will move next year to Pinnacle Hill, less than a mile from my house.

sigh... ::)

(Every once in a while, a few other signals on 106.9 slip through from around the region, most notably CKQB from Ottawa and occasionally WKZA from Lakewood, near Jamestown, NY.)

Hooray, my favorite FM freq......

First I'll say that WRMA "Romance 106.7" was one of the first IBOC stations in South Florida, covering 106.5 & 106.9.....WRMA is no longer IBOC.

106.9 is usually WZZS Zolfo Springs FL.....also:
W295AN Marathon, mostly a relay of 90.3 WAFG....
also when conditions are right, Habana Radio in Cuba & WKZY Cross City (almost 300 miles).

106.9 is a great e-skip frequency when Es are strong.

KLTH (106.7) sideband, almost as clear as the main channel. Currently it and KKCW are probably the strongest VHFs situated to the right of 91.9 that I can hear at the flat. (KKCW exhibits the same phenomenon, even though they are running IBAC.)

If KLTH are running IBAC, I have yet to hear its effect on my analogue set.

106.9 is the home of WMIT, broadcasting from Mt. Mitchell, the highest mountain peak east of the Mississippi. Until the 1980's it broadcast with 316,000 watts. It covered parts of 11 states and could be heard clearly in Downtown Atlanta. It's now much lower in power, 36,000 watts now, but still covers parts of seven states. If you live in the southeastern US, it's hard to miss this one.

Here, about 90% of the time, it is the Gator from Hilton Head. It comes in pretty strong here, only less than 65 miles from the transmitter. That has a huge signal. Most of the time, it can be heard on 95 all the way past 26. I've heard it in Orangeburg.

One time, I heard the Fayetteville area's 106.9. I've never heard WMIT here, even though I've tried many times.

Usually, WMIT doesn't start coming in until you get to Columbia, because of 106.7 from Orangeburg. Anywhere NW or N of I-20 on I-26 or 77, you can hear them.

106.9 MHz must have some unusual signal propagation characteristics because I always hear more stories of super long distance reception on that specific frequency compared to any other FM frequency on the dial.

Strangely enough, in Durham, North Carolina, I've only logged WMIT once. Here, 106.9 was usually Suffolk's WAFX "106.9 The Fox" or Southern Pines-licensed WMGU "Magic 106.9", but that was before the current format/calls. We don;t really hear anything now on the frequency since Durham-licensed WFXC 107.1 runs HD.

The above 2 posts reminded me....I totally forgot.....

My FM tropo record to the north is indeed WAFX in VA, 770 miles. It happened for the 1st time in December last year!

That's my semi-local. Ottawa's take on Virgin Radio, formally known as 106.9 'The Bear'

This station has been sat-linked and is heard at Kandahar AF.

From my locale about 40 mi north of Chicago, 106.9 is mainly dominated by IBOC hash that is provided courtesy of WPPN 106.7. However, when the atmosphere cooperates, I do occasionally pull in WZBK (Big Buck Country 106.9) which is a class A from the Milwaukee market. It is the hardest to get Milwaukee signal from my area, thanks to our friends at Univision Radio and Ibiquity - all so that 3 people can hear a low-rated station in HD. :D

Here in Poughkeepsie, NY, 106.9 is a nice DX frequency

Dominant is WCCC-Hartford, CT, regular 24/7, but not real strong, at 55 miles. Rotating the antenna brings in weak-but-steady translator W295AA from Middletown, NY (36 miles), relaying Albany's WAMC-90.3. Also, very frequently, but not always, I get WKDN Family Radio from Camden, NJ at 144 miles, sometimes in summer very strong. Right now as I type this they're in, with interference at times from W295AA.

DX on 106.9 since 2003:

WKZY - Cross City, FL "K-Z-Y",
WSWT - Peorida, IL
KDMU - Bloomfield, IA
KIHK - Rock Valley, IA "Hawk Country", most-distant on 106.9 at 1144 miles.
WBQX - Thomaston, ME "W-Bach"
WMOZ - Moose Lake, MN "Oldies 106.9"
CBN - St. John's NF - CBC Radio Two
WPHR - Auburn, NY "Power 106.9"
WEZX - Scranton, PA "Rock 107"
WWYN - Mckenzie, TN
WKXD - Monterrey, TN
WAFX - Suffolk, VA "The Fox"

There was some good tropo this morning in Ohio/Michigan area, it looks like it might move into this area over the next couple of days.

Best of DX to all!

In Vallejo it's all KFRC(KCBS 740)

But in West Sac where I visit my nephew it's a weak KFRC in SF & KRNO in Reno
Yes, I've noticed going up I-80 over the Sacramento River into West Sac, to the top of the bridge KRNO dominates, on the other side its all KCBS. I've definatly picked it up going over Kirker Pass Road in Pittsburg, and here at home in Concord, I think I heard it on my Insignia Portable, but I'm not sure
