FM Frequency of the week: 107.9

I cannot receive any DX on 107.9 here, because there is a local on it-KMLE Country 108.

That's almost the same situation as I have here. 100kw local at 33 miles. I did catch them off one day & heard KFIN-Arkansas.

This is the most interesting of the local frequencies here. 107.9 is owned by a 100 watt college station (CKDJ) that is only on Monday thru Fiday when the scho0l is in session. On some Sundays they sign on for enough time to carry a minor league hockey game. During the summer, weeknights from midnight to 6 and weekends except Sunday Afterno0ns (sometimes) it's open season. The station is located in the west side of the city, so the signal is non-existant in some parts of the east side and is drowned out downtown...just like most of the FM dial.

107.9 is also home to one of my favourite hard rockers..KFMW Waterlo0 Iowa. I love the voice of the guy who does the station ID'S...he also intros the monday night fo0tball segments on westwo0d 1. Man I'd love to have that voice.

From Coldwater, MI:

107.9 is a pretty poor DX frequency due to very strong splatter from 50kw WRKR (107.7) just 21 miles away. I can barely make out these stations during tropo conditions.

WJFX- New Haven, IN (Hot 107-9)
WCRZ- Flint, MI (Cars 108)
WSHZ- Muskegon, MI
WNTR- Indianapolis, IN (The Track)
WLEY- Aurora, IL (La Ley)
WENZ- Cleveland, OH (Z 107-9)

From here , 100kw WPFM Panama City, FL is 73 miles to my SE but I've logged a few over them on E skip and tropo. MikeStandards WNTR is one of my favorite catches with a strong signal & top-of-the-hour ID recorded: http://members.aol.com/kw4rz/mp3/107-9_WNTR_Jul29_07.mp3. Tough frequency, and tough state from here.

Was a great frequency before Indy signed back on around 1984...was my cleanest shot at Chicagoland. I'm 30 miles south of Indy & with my Bolin Phaser & 2 yagis, WNTR will often go away & WAMW in Washington,IN will be there. Aside from that, it's a pretty worthless channel.

What did you get on 107.9 FM!

If tropo enhancement conditions are up, then usually KQQL, Anoka, MN "Kool 108" (111 mi). The only thing else I've heard there was WBCV, Wausau, WI (181 mi).

Not the greatest frequency here in the Dayton area witgh local WMMX next door on 107.7, sometimes I can pull WODB in Columbus and occasionally WNTR from Indianapolis.

107.9 is a pretty decent DX channel here near Poughkeepsie, NY. WEBE-CT is a regular on this channel, but not strong enough to be called a semi-local. 50,000 watts at 55 miles, but their antenna is right on the coast, just 384' above average terrain, and just about 200' above the average terrain in my direction. WEBE is SE of me, and most DX is SW or W, so WEBE can be nulled.

During the summer, I often hear WKRF in PA, also WRNB-Philly, WVPS-VT, and WXKS-Boston make appearances. I've heard WFSI-Md., and have noted WNCT-NC "Oldies 107.9" several times, one of my most-distant East Coast tropo stations.

A number of E-skip stations have made it on 107.9, including all 5 Flordia FM's, 4 of them in that fantastic 7/6/2004 opening. All together 18 loggings on this frequency, the most distant is KESS "Que Buena" from the Dallas, Texas area, 1392 miles.

WRNB from One Liberty Place in downtown Philadelphia (25 miles) is the local in my area. However, its low power makes it pretty spotty over certain terrain near King of Prussia and parts of Chester County, PA. Where it comes in poorly (northward facing hillsides), WKRF from Tobyhanna, PA (north of Allentown and east of Wilkes-Barre) takes over briefly. That's a good 120 miles away. It's pretty dependable - even in winter. For less than 1,000 watts, WKRF really gets out there!!

During a solid tropo event last August, I was able to null WRNB from my house and picked up (with an official TOH ID) WEBE Westport, CT. A solid 180 miles from my location! It's the only CT FM station I've ever picked up down here. And, that was with a mere Sports Walkman. Honestly, it was 11:30 at night and I was in bed (and lazy) - if not, I would have pulled out the Eton E5 for some real FM dxing!
