FM Frequency of The Week: 107.9

What do you pick up on the highest U.S. FM frequency, 107.9?

I've gotten nothing, since 107.7 KNDD "The End"'s IBOC hash takes the whole frequency up.

When I was in Yakima May '09 and Apr. 10 I got K300AP Sunnyside, WA (K-LOVE) but that's it!

From my location, here along the north side of the St. Lawrence river, I usually pick up Syracuse NY's 'Hot 1079' WHTT, or Burlington VT's WVPS (VPR), while the 1kW CHUC 'The Breeze' pops in from Cobourg ON, from time to time.

In northern VA it's usually non-commercial religious WFSI in Annapolis, MD about 50 miles to the east. In some tropo events, I have heard WYYD Amherst, VA about 150 miles away with country music and class C1, and WZQK West Point, VA about 40 miles east of Richmond--a class A classical music station. During a recent Eskip, I heard WIRK down in West Palm Beach, FL, just north of Miami, playing country music.

I live where WIRK is a semi-local....but on even half decent Tropo nights, WSRZ near Sarasota will come in with oldies, and even my Sony RDS readout will show "WSRZ-FM". Sometimes WSRZ's HD2 is alone.

There is also WMFM 107.9 in Key West, but a recent transmitter issue makes them as an LPFM.

On the rarest occasions, even Inspiration Radio 107.9 in Nassau, Bahamas, has crept in....it can be heard in the upper FL Keys if the antenna is pointed correctly.

Here in the Knoxville area zero zip nada with WIVK hashing all over it. In Dayton (particularly north and east) even with WMMX on 107.7 one might get Columbus, Indianapolis or once I heard a preacher station from near Charleston WV.

Here in Poughkeepsie, NY, 107.9 is a pretty decent DX frequency. Nearest station is WEBE in Westport (Bridgeport), CT with a pretty good signal at 55 miles. Also, I regularly get WKRF Tobyanna, PA at 93 miles, usually with some fading and/or some WEBE interference. Since WEBE is SE of here, and most DX possibilities are SW or W of here, WEBE can be nulled down and DX comes through when the conditions are right.

DX loggings on 107.9 since 2003 include the following:

KFIN Jonesboro, AR "K-Fine"
KVMA Magnolia, AR
WNDN Chiefland, FL
WSRZ Coral Cove, FL "Oldies 108"
WMFM Key West, FL
WPFM Panama City, FL
WIRK West Palm Beach, FL
WCDD Canton, IL "CD 107.9"
KSJM Winfield, KS "107.9 Jams"
KRKA Erath, MO "Hot 107.9"
WFSI Annapolis, MD "Family Radio"
WXKS Medford (Boston), MA "Kiss 108"
KTIC West Point, NE "The Bull"
WRNB Pennsauken, NJ (Philadelphia)
WNCT Greenville, NC "Oldies 107.9"
KPFX Fergus, ND "The Fox"
KXQL Flandreau, SD "Kool FM"
KESS Lewisville, TX "Que Buena"
WVPS Burlington, VT "Vermont Public Radio"

In Northern Chester county Pa. (45 miles northwest of Philly) I use to get a clear WKRF from Tobyhanna but since the move in of WRNB in Philly it is now a mix of the two stations battling it out. For dxing; WEBE 108 from Bridgeport Ct. over powers both WKRF and WRNB from time to time in full HD. I do not recall getting any other stations on 107.9

Here, its a bunch of stations, including WLOW from Hilton Head, WGTR from the Myrtle Beach area, and Charlotte sometimes. Hilton Head and Myrtle Beach almost always mix in.

Oldies 108 {WSRZ) ,Sarasota//Coral Springs is a semi-local for me in St. Petersburg, but when tropo conditions are right, WIRK out of West Palm Beach will override them from time to time; in fact one time driving on I-75 not more than 10 miles from WSRZ (transmitter site is south of Sarasota near Nokomis) WIRK-West Palm was overtaking them until I was less than 10 miles from Nokomis.

Unlike cd637299 I have never received the 107.9 out of the Bahamas; will have to listen to them in future tropo conditions; of course I'm on the other side of the state from the Bahamas.

Here in central Mississippi it is all but certain the only thing on the dial will be WFCA Ackerman (French Camp Academy religious radio). It isn't a particularly tall tower or on a big hill, but by God (ha) this station covers most of central Mississippi, and was one of the few "near-distant" stations for me to not be affected by last month's e-skip or tropo events.

That station is an absolute pain in the butt east and south of Columbus. There are places it walks all over our 107.9 even as close as Lancaster, a half-hour southeast of downtown Columbus.
