FM Frequency of the Week: 107.9

, CHUC Cobourg ON often takes over since its move to FM.
Whrn CHUC was on AM it could sometimes be a relatively easy catch around sunset at my location in northwest suburban Chicago. A little surprising, since CHUC operated on 1450. It also helped that they were running 10kw directional (IIRC). Most of the signal went north, But they were still the 800 pound gorilla on the channel.

South Mississippi:

strong signal on WZKX Bay St. Louis/Biloxi/Gulfport, The Most and The Best Country is on Kicker 108

Central Washington:
KMBI Spokane is dominant across most of the eastern half of the state, with the exception of Wenatchee and Yakima, where LP stations are present in both locations. KHPE Albany OR can be heard in some south/southwest facing spots in the Cascades.

I'm surprised I haven't heard WZKX on the gulf at the place where we visit, but it's always WPFM that makes it in on tropo.

Hartland, VT:
W299AM Lebanon, NH translator for WFRD Hanover, NH. Not sure how long this one will be around, as Dartmouth College is looking for someone to take WFRD off its hands. Usual reason: students not interested in radio anymore.

Meriden, CT:
WEBE (WEBE 108) Westport, CT, powerhouse Hot AC station.

Vallejo, CA

KSTE-FM Sacramento Stunting with a fringe signal

107.7 The Bone doesn't give me headaches, It only give me little splatter on 107.9

Carmichael, CA

KSTE-FM Sacramento Stunting

Cols can change

DX/Retro - While living in Pacifica, I never really got it cause of 107.7 KSOL at that rime
Same here and previously under a different broadcasting license. 107.9 FM Sacramento was previously KDND-FM under Entercom management. That was until Entercom surrendered the license of KDND-FM as a condition over the CBS Radio deal in 2017.

Mankato, MN

KQQL "Kool 108" Minneapolis (licensed to Anoka)
When the Twin Cities was a frequent business destination for me, I used to listen to KQQL quite a bit. I remember their signal being stronger in the northwest part of the member. I used to usually stay on the 494 strip near Bloomington and the Mall of America. Signal there was usually pretty good, but not quite as strong as on the north and west side. Given the Anoka COL and the (subtle) variation in signal strength, I always assumed the stick must be somewhere north or west , as opposed to where the TV sticks are, Foshay tower. etc.

To some extent, that's what happened to WDCR (Dartmouth College Radio) some 15 years ago.

Yes KQQL's tower is north of Anoka (which is a northern suburb of Minneapolis) but being a class C they still get out the signal pretty well

Most of the Class C's in Minneapolis and the full powered TV stations are all at the Telefarm in Shoreview (NE of Minneapolis)

The low powered TV stations are in downtown Minneapolis on the IDS building along with the auxiliary twoer for alot of the radio stations

I knew the TV towers were in Shoreview. Driven by them a bunch of times. I zlso knew that WCCO's stick was in the Anoka area. Also have driven by that one. But I was a little fuzzy on exactly where the KQQL tower was. Did they aactually start oout in Saint Cloud? Or am I either thinking of something else....or completely off base. I do remember KQQL coming in just fine on cheap clock radios in St. Cloud hotel rooms.

Its in Oak Grove, which is ~20 miles north of Anoka.

KQQL has always been in Anoka according to Wiki

Thanks for the map and all the info, I think may have been thinking of a TV station with COL in St. Cloud that was using the slogan "Clearr from St. Cloud" back in the 80s. Also, judging from the map, I probably didn't ever drive by the KQQL stick. WCCO, however, is right where I remembered it.

You must be thinking of KXLI 41 which was licensed to St Cloud with their tower in Big Lake (halfway between Minneapolis and St Cloud). It’s now Ion KPXM

Jon Ellis at northpine.com recently wrote an article about channel 41

Great stuff. I remember KITN. channel 29, as "The Kitten that Roars". During the 80s, I was in the Twin Citi4s about every six weeks. Didn't get to see much of those UHF independents because most of the hotel TVs didn't carry them. Channel 17 was an exception with rebroadcast National Weather Service audio all day long before going to their Public Television Programming. Came in very handy when planning for a day of local business appointments. Especially in winter!

Central Kansas:
A fair to weak mix of KZRS/Great Bend and KWLS/Winfield, depending on antenna positioning.

North Iowa:
A fair/bordering on semi-weak reception of KFMW/Waterloo. Have not been able to pull in KQQL/Anoka or KKRF/Stuart at my location.
