We’re into the 101s as we survey what were the Class B/C FM frequencies before Docket 80-90. Today, it’s 101.1. What do you/did you/have you heard on 101.1?
East Tennessee: Knoxville/Sevierville. Since I moved here in 2010, 101.1 has always been occupied by WIAM-LP. The Sevierville-Pigeon Forge-Gatlinburg area at various times has had a fill-in translator for WJXB to help cover dead spots in Gatlinburg (since moved to 107.3), and now religious LPFM WJFS-LP, Gatlinburg. To the northwest in Oak Ridge is W266AM, WYSH’s translator.
From the time the B-97.5 vacated 101.5 and before the LPFM signed on, I was able to hear WSGS, Hazard, KY a few times.
Retro/other: Dayton, Ohio area. WRIF, Detroit occasionally made it before some changes on the dial; as did WSGS. A translator for WSWO-LP held forth on the frequency, which currently has a translator for WHKO-HD2 which currently feeds a leased classic soul format. The former CD101 (now WOSA) made it as far as Yellow Springs even with the WSWO translator, and the current WIZF, Erlanger KY made it to Dayton’s South suburbs at times.
RETRO DX Clip of the week: Before there was WSGS, there was WKIC in Hazard, KY. Letters to Santa and all in this recording. http://46124.info/FM/Kentucky/KY Hazard 101.1 1967 WKIC.mp3
