FM Frequency of the Week 2018-19: 101.3

FM Frequency of the week: 101.3.

It occurs to me that last week, I got ahead of myself and skipped 101.3, so I’ll do a make-good here.

What do you/did you get on 101.3?

East Tennessee: All WECO, Wartburg, TN, all the time. They’ve recently filed a CP for increased power which seems to be about warding off translator encroachment that has interfered with local listeners who commute to Oak Ridge. (There’s not a lot of retail base in Morgan County). The directional pattern remains that precludes making it a Knoxville move-in.

Retro/other: Dayton, Oho area. Most of the time it was a weak WFMG, Richmond, IN. WNCO, Ashland, Ohio could get out at times when the band opened up. They have a pretty good signal in the middle of the state. A translator in the main tower field on 101.1 and WCLI on 101.5 likely makes 101.3 reception next to impossible.

Lafayette, IN in the 80s and 90s. 101.3 is now the home of Purdue U’s WBAA-FM. I don’t remember much of anything else of note coming in before they signed on.

Retro DX Clip of the week: Beautiful Music WEZO, Rochester, NY from 1971. http://46124.info/FM/New York/NY Rochester 101.3 1971 WEZO.mp3

I'll skip over it myself. 101.3 here is basically empty. Except for occasional mild splatter from the Chicago 101.1. :)

BTW/Sidebar point.... One of the things I like about being retirement is not having to deal with phone calls asking me for make-goods. I was always glad to oblige legitimate requests, but for every one of those there were at least a half dozen ridiculous ones.

Mason City, IA:
Usually RF bleedover from KLKK (103.7), but can eek in KDWB from up in the Cities on some days.

Central KS:
KFDI/Wichita, a monstrous signal day/night

We get KIOI, as "star 101.3" here in the Bay Area.

Its one of the most powerful FM stations here in California at 125KW with it's HAAT just over 1150 feet ( 354 meters ). The power for all FM stations out here on the west coast are capped at 50KW, but this station was grandfathered in, because it received that bump in power on August 14th, 1964. The station transmits from San Bruno Mountain ( we call it radio mountain ). If you ever fly into SFO at night, you can't miss all the red blinking lights on top of that mountain. Its the coolest thing!!! Some stations that broadcast from there, unfortunately, don't make it down here to San Jose to well ( even though the signal is going over water ).

Warminster PA(Philly 'burbs):

Usually splatter from local 101.1 WBEB or semi-local 101.5 WKXW
from Trenton NJ. Tropo situations have brought us WKCI from Hamden
CT(Hartford area) and WROZ from Lancaster PA.

From Carrollton, MO.
K267BN Bosworth, MO. (LPFM for KROL 1430 AM - Formerly KAOL until earlier this year).
Both this station & KROL-AM have been off-the-air most of this year due to KROL's transmitter suffering flood damage, K267BN does return to the air once in a while airing what seems to be a mix of Oldies/Classic Hits/Soft AC.
I don't yet know why 1430 AM changed their callsign.
Before K267BN signed on-the-air (Around 2012.), I used to occasionally hear KTXR-FM Springfield, MO during the Summer months, I think I have even heard it recently with K267BN off-the-air again.

From Baldwin County, Alabama, near the Gulf of Mexico:

Nothing, this is the HD sideband for iHeart's heritage rocker "TK 101" on 101.5 MHz in Pensacola. I have logged WJDQ Meridian, MS maybe once or twice, but nothing else.

Great description! I always wondered why the signal was so strong.
