FM Frequency of the Week 2018-19: 106.1

Slowly working our way through what were once the Class B/C US FM frequencies.
What do you/did you/have you heard on 106.1?

East Tennessee (Knoxville/Sevierville): The little-paid attention to, but locally owned West Knoxville A/C rimshot, WJRV,Oliver Springs "The River"

Retro/other: Dayton, Ohio area. Most of the time if it's anything it's WVNO, Mansfield, Ohio and secondarily, WWWY, North Vernon, IN.

As WOCH-FM, WNVI was the first radio station I ever interviewed at in 1975. I remember a piano. At the time they were a country simlcast during the day with Beautiful Music at night.

In the near north Chicago suburbs 106.1 is bleed over from local 105.9 WCFS.

Ellensburg WA

A weak K291BV Wapato (Big 106.1, Hot AC) serving Yakima. In some areas, they will mix with KBKS Tacoma (CHR). I've even pulled out K291BS Richland (More FM) east of Kittitas.
Other logs include KWCQ Condon OR (Rhythmic) which may or may not be on the air anymore, and KZFN Moscow ID (CHR).
CHWE Winnipeg MB (CHR) was logged on an eskip opening in July 2014. KKMV Rupert ID (Country) was logged via meteor scatter in August 2014. In the time I lived in Yakima, 106.1 was unnullable. Now in Ellensburg it should be wide open if a strong Es opening reaches the top of the band.

Here in Crystal Lake, IL., I can usually get at least a whiff of WMIL. COL is Waukesha, WI, but the stick is on one of the Milwaukee TV towers at their antenna farm on the north side of that city.

I first heard this FM station back in the late 90's when it was an Oldies station (It's now a CHR station.)

Mostly a weak WMIL Waukesha, WI in Manistee, MI. One of the more common Milwaukee signals, but not as common as 90.7 WHAD or 99.1 WMYX. Very rarely, I will get WACD from Antigo, WI, WCWI from Adams, WI, or WJXQ from Charlotte, MI

Local WISX, 106.1 the Breeze(iHeart soft hits station).

Lexington, KY:

A weak signal from Adult Contemporary WMOR, Morehead (roughly halfway between Lexington and Huntington, WV on I-64). Rarely anything else.

Mason City, IA:
Clear as a bell KLSS/MC, which bleeds into several different frequencies as well.

Central KS:
Also a clear as a bell signal from KXKU/Lyons.

Here in Nashville: splatter from 105.9 wnrq (classic rock).

Historic: In the mid-80's. WRDU ("Wilson, Raleigh, Durham, Chapel Hill") threw "world class rock" across much of central Virginia on 106.1. Routinely listenable in the Lynchburg region with a unique and very welcome rock format for that market... in fact, one evening in 1987 I drove east on US 460, tuned in WRDU just east of Roanoke in Blue Ridge, and (following 460-to-360-to-64 - a route known well to all Virginians) listened to the station all the way to Newport News. Admittedly, signal was pretty scrappy at times, but surprisingly good for most of the trip.

106.1, KMEL FM out of San Francisco ( San Bruno mountain to be exact ) with 69KW of music power, and a 10KW booster for the Diablo / Tri valley region

That's what I get as well. The signal is so strong it bleeds into 106.3 KBBL, a 1.6 Kw station out of Santa Rosa playing CHR. In fact, I can barely pick up 106.3.

Meriden, CT: Nothing but splatter from 105.9 WHCN, with its transmitter just a couple of miles away.

From Smith County, Texas, 5 miles NW of Tyler:

This frequency yields 2 usual suspects. It is either local translator K291CH Tyler, 68w @ 80m, rebroadcasting also local 100kW Country powerhouse KYKX Longview "KYKX (read as Kix) 105.7 ", which is an Alpha Media O&O, or it is iHeart CHR KHKS Denton, 99kW @ 508m, "106.1 KISS FM" targeting Dallas.

I have also logged rock station KXRR Monroe, LA, 97kW @ 310m, "Rock 106", and fellow rocker KIOC Orange, 100kW @ 326m, "Big Dog 106", as well as Country KKBI Broken Bow, OK, 17kW @ 249m, from the other side of the Red River.
