FM Frequency of the Week 2018-19-20: 103.1 & 103.9

Doing the 103s this week.
103.1
East Tennessee: WJLJ, Etowah TN with a Christian format
Retro/other: Dayton, area. With 102.9 next door, really nothing.

____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________

103.9
East Tennessee: The WOZO/WOZW LPFM duo. Outside of their area, You might get WBED, Blue Ridge, GA or WPPL, London, KY

Dayton, OH area: WZDA, Beavercreek, but go a little east and you might snag WJKR, Worthington, (Columbus) OH.

I can remember being in my home town in Western Ohio and catching WXKE, Fort Wayne, WDJX, Xenia OH and WBBY, Westerville OH in rapid succession.

Retro DX clips: 103.1 Quick E-Skip IF of WSGL, Naples, FL http://46124.info/FM/Florida/FL Naples 103.1 1989 WSGL.mp3
103.9 Another quick one from WNOI, Flora, IL http://46124.info/FM/Illinois/IL Flora 103.9 1971 WNOI.mp3

In the near north Chicago suburbs 103.1 is a strong WPNA-FM with an ethnic format. 103.9 in this area is a weak translator for WTMX "The Mix".

Mankato, MN

103.1: K276EH FM translator of KFSP 1230AM sports "The Fan Mankato"
103.9: usually KUOO Spirit Lake, IA or sometimes K280EC (Minn Public Radio translator) Owatonna

103.1:
Mason City, IA - A very weak to non existent signal from KHAM/Britt. (Currently at low power, 2k watts I believe, but has a CP to upgrade and would cover in town here)
Central KS - From the hilltop, a moderate to weak signal from KEKS/Olpe (Emporia’s CHR)

103.9:
Mason City, IA - Bleedover from adjacent signal KLKK/Clear Lake, with KUOO/Spirit Lake occasionally sneaking in
Central KS - Static, but I believe I’ve received a weak signal from KRFS-FM/Superior, NE during DXing

Lexington, KY:
103.1: A weak signal from Louisville country outlet "Q103.1" WQNU, Lyndon (23 kW @ 554' ~60 mi)
103.9: Strong signal from local translator (WLKT-HD2, Hip-Hop/Urban "Real 103.9") W280DO, Lexington (250 W @ 421' ~3 mi)

Zachary, LA:
103.1: Open frequency for 120 miles. Usually no splatter from WRQQ next door at 103.3 (100 kW @ 1004' ~25 mi)
103.9: Another open frequency. Nothing for 130 miles.

Two locals for me here in suburban Columbus, Ohio ...

103.1 WVKO with regional Mexican transmitting from north of Johnstown, between 25 and 30 miles to my north.
103.9 WJKR "Jack FM." 6,000 watts from the west side of Columbus. Used to transmit from Westerville, and this move definitely put them closer to Dayton's 103.9. They generally clash between London and Springfield.

103.9 was jazz WBBY when I was a kid and then the frequency went silent for several years once WBBY left the air at the end of 1990 (literally at the end, on New Year's Eve). In that time, nothing came in on 103.9 in my part of Columbus, not even Dayton.
As for 103.1, I remember trying to pick up WOWO's FM signal when I visited my grandparents in St. Marys, Ohio, 60 miles southeast of Fort Wayne, especially when the two signals broke and 1190 would have the Komets while the FM continued with music. WOWO-FM didn't make it that far, but I think it started coming in maybe 15 miles to the northwest, possibly less.

Moses Lake, WA

103.1 KYKV (K-Love) is strong here w/ RDS although during the overnight hours and mornings with high humidity, KCDA will override in some spots. KCDA's HD rarely comes in despite 102.9 being blank even though I can receive the HD signals of its sister stations. K276GF/KTIX Pendleton and K276CY/KOZI Manson can both come in if the conditions are right.
103.9 can be one of three stations: KBBD Spokane, K280BZ/KWWW Wenatchee, and K280GI/KGTS Richland. It all depends on the time of the day and conditions.

Ellensburg WA near CWU

103.1 here is KYKV Selah (K-LOVE), solid and quite strong even being from Yakima and multipathed by Manastash/Umtanum. Nothing else has been heard here, too strong. However 25 miles away at Mount Lillian (6100') I was able to (finally) get KCDA Post Falls ID, along with K276BY Pateros (KOZI-FM).
In Yakima I got K276GF Pendleton (KTIX) once when KYKV was off.

103.9 is usually a weak K280BZ Wenatchee (KWWW), but there are spots where I have heard KBBD Spokane (Adult Hits) and K280GI Richland (KGTS).
Eskip logs include KHYM Copeland KS (Religion), KNLV-FM Ord NE (Country), KZON Gilbert AZ (Top 40) and KBDS Taft CA (Rhythmic).
