FM Frequency of the Week 2018-19-20: 104.1

Into the 104s as we survey the traditional Class B/C frequencies. What do or did you get on 104.1?

East Tennessee: A translator for WSEV (AM), W281BQ makes it into South Knoxville. If you’re in West Knoxville, you’ll find WMJA-LP, Loudon, TN. Before the Sevierville translator, WCLE, Calhoun TN made appearances, as did WALR near Atlanta. I had one time reception of Portsmouth, OH when it was simulcasting WNKU.

Retro/other: Dayton, OH. With 103.9 downtown (having tower danced from Xenia), not a lot but WLBC-FM Muncie and the Portsmouth station were ocassional visitors. Further north, WLBC was a semi-local but midnight signoff sometimes brought Evansville IN.

Retro DX Clip of the week: Here’s one station I grew up with, WLBC-FM, Muncie IN with Drake-Chenault’s “Solid Gold”

Mason City, IA:
A semi listenable KMYR/Ames if you can null it in right. Might get KZJK out of the Cities or WNAX-FM from Yankton, SD on occasion.

Central KS:
Was blank for a long time before a translator out of Newton signed on a few years ago. K281CD, I believe. Relays KJRG-AM.

Warminster PA(Philly 'burbs):

Usually WAEB-FM(B-104, iHeart Top 40 station) from Allentown. Tropo has given us Wink 104
(WNNK) from Harrisburg and WMRQ from Connecticut.

Far northwest suburbs of Chicago....

Mostly splatter from WBMX 104.3 (Chicago) and local rimshot WAWY 103.9 (Dundee, IL). Ocasionally WZEE from Madison, WI manages to sneak in between them.

WYAV Myrtle Beach 80% of the time (Wave 104, classic rock). 15% of the time I hear Cocoa Beach/Orlando’s WTKS here in Charleston. WYAV has a very powerful signal. By far the best of any of the Myrtle Beach FM stations.

Even during no tropo, it can be heard weakly. Any sort of tropo, it comes in strongly.

Lexington, KY:

Always (except during tropo) the powerhouse K-LOVE affiliate WPYK, Portsmouth OH (Ashland-Huntington market), which used to be heritage country station WPAY. During tropo from the south or west, it's usually WCKQ, Campbellsville or even less frequently, WIKY, Evansville IN. Depending on which side of town you're on, you may have to dodge splatter from local translator W280DO at 103.9.

Ellensburg WA
KXDD Yakima, somewhat fuzzy. They are one of the strongest Yakima stations heard here. Manastash Ridge does a good job at blocking most of the mid and low-power Yakima stations from being clear.
