FM Frequency of the Week 2018-19-20: 107.9

And finally......

We complete the traditional Class B/C U.S. FM frequencies.

What do you/did you/have you heard on 107.9?

East Tennessee: The omnipresence of WIVK on 107.7 doesn't allow much of anything.

Retro/other: Dayton, OH area: Again, a strong local on 107.7, but I did have receptions of WNTR (WTPI), Indianapolis and whatever the 107.9 in the Columbus market was occasionally (especially a little outside the market).

Next week: We'll start the non-commercial band.

In the near north Chicago suburbs it's WLEY licensed to Aurora, Il with a good signal.
Previously this station was WAUR and then WYSY playing current pop music and at various times oldies.

In Atlanta, that spot is WHTA Hot 107.9, a hip hop/ urban station owned by Urban One.
For many years it used to be a jazz formatted station.

It's usually one of three stations in Manistee, MI:
WBCV Wausau, WI (the most common despite being the farthest of these three 107.9s)
WCDY McBain, MI
WMUS Muskegon, MI

Occasionally I've heard WCRZ Flint, MI and WLEY Aurora, IL. I have never received WLJD Charlevoix, MI (which is much closer than WBCV, but is a "lazy A" with 5kW @ 50m)

I left out the Retro DX Clip of the week from Bob Hawkins. Let's hear the final sign off of WIFE-FM, 107.9, Indianapolis.

The frequency was silent from 1976 to 1974, when WTPI came on, with a full-service format. Here's a clip of their test on the Saturday before the sign on. http://46124.info/FM/Indiana/IN Indianapolis 107.9 1976 WIFE Final Sign Off.mp3

Here's the sign-on: http://46124.info/FM/Indiana/IN Indianapolis 107.9 1984 WTPI Oct 15 Sign On.mp3

Lexington (Central KY):
Local Class A Hip-Hop/R&B WBTF, Midway.

Zachary (Baton Rouge area), LA:
Semi-local Class C1 Rhythmic Top-40 KHXT, Erath (Lafayette).

That's the infamous KDND as I recall, an Entercom property. They paid $16M out on that lawsuit. Yikes!

Honolulu KKOL 100,000 watts

However beginning at Keaau Beach Park and heading north on Farrington Hwy, the signal is lost even though the tower is about 10 miles away. It's directional away from Kauai putting as little as 0.090 ERP in a certain direction. https://www.fccdata.org/fm_pattern.php?&appid=14253&trot=0&ism= At Keaau Beach Park heading north 250 watt translator K300AT from Kauai comes in about 87 miles away. Is it legal to have this translator from another island override the local 100,000 watt signal?

My first DX on FM was 70000 watt WNOB...WENZ Cleveland, when WGMZ/WCRZ was off the air due to a tower collapse in a storm in the early 1960s. WGMZ/WCRZ used to be heard all over the Lower Peninsula before all the drop ins.

Ellensburg WA

The most common here is KJHS-LP Wenatchee (Spanish Christian), albeit there are pockets all around Ellensburg and the outskirts where KMBI-FM Spokane (Religion) and K300AP Sunnyside (K-LOVE // KRKL) will pop in. KHPE Albany OR (Christian Music) was logged in October 2019 but has been heard previously at the old Yakima QTH.

Eskip logs consist of just two: KMLE Chandler AZ (Country) and KPRT Kirtland NM (Adult Hits).

Meriden, CT:

WEBE, Westport, CT, a little flaky here in the fringe reception area. I don't hear anything intelligible underneath, although WXKS-FM Boston would be the logical interloper.

Mason City, IA:
Most of the time, its a moderate to weak signal from KFMW/Waterloo, though KQQL from the Cities can fight its way in every now and then.

Central KS:
Being on a hill, it allows me to catch KZRS/Great Bend, roughly 80 miles due west of my location. Back in the day, I would occasionally get KSJM/KWLS from Winfield if the antenna was pointed just right.
