FM Frequency of the Week 2018-19-20: 88.7

What do you, did you, or have you received on 88.7?

In East Tennessee, depending where in the Knoxville or Sevierville area you are, it's either the directional WWQK, the Life FM affiliate, or Isothermal Community College's WNCW, Spindale, NC.

Retro/other: Dayton, Ohio area. You might hear WOBO, Batavia, OH or WUFM, Columbus (flagship for the alternative rockin'' Radio U Christian network). I've caught CIMX a time or two when I lived up there. As CJOM, they were a frequent flyer in my West Central Ohio home.

Retro DX Clip of the week: Long haul tropo from Indiana WIAA, Interlochen, Michigan http://46124.info/FM/Michigan/MI Interlochen 88.7 1990 WIAA .mp3

When WIAA was on 88.3, CKWW-FM/CJOM/CIMX was heard all over Michigan on 88.7. Now is apparently a good time to DX 88.7 again in Michigan. as WIAA's transmitting facility had a major failure. They are temporarily being broadcast on WSRJ 105.5 Honor, which has been on Silent STA.

I'm 31 miles from WIAA's tower and the only thing I've heard on 88.7 in the last month or so is a very occasional WERN (WPR News/Classical flagship from Madison, WI). I'd love to get WSIS and/or CIMX (while WSRJ was off, I did nab WWCK from Flint)

Lexington, KY:
Very weak signal from variety station WOBO, Batavia (OH).

Zachary, LA:
Weak signal from Public Radio/NPR/Classical KRVS, Lafayette.

St. Louis area--WSIE Edwardsville, IL (SIUE)

WSIE is also fairly dominant in Chatham, IL where I live, about 12 miles southwest of the Illinois State Capitol Complex in Springfield. But a fair to poor signal, however, depending on your radio.

When you get into Springfield city proper itself, it's a mix of WSIE and WPGU Champaign, depending on weather conditions and part of town. I have also even heard WPRC Sheffield, IL (a repeater of Christian contemporary station WCIC Peoria) before.

Here in Columbus, it's local Christian contemporary WUFM with 5,000 watts transmitting from the south side of town, about 12 miles west of me. I am almost certain that they share a tower with WSYX-TV, our ABC affiliate.
But when I see 88.7, my first thought is CIMX, 89X from Windsor. 100,000-watt blaster transmitting from south of Windsor and putting one heck of a signal out into southeast Michigan, northwest Ohio and obviously far southern Ontario. At least when I attended the University of Toledo, they were one of the most popular stations in the market and, not surprisingly, the most powerful Detroit-area FM in Toledo.
They put up with some interference on the UT campus from the campus radio station, WXUT on 88.3, but beyond a mile or so out that interference faded (WXUT was and is just 100 watts, and yours truly was its sports director from 1998-2000).
Once heard CIMX as far south as Columbus one Sunday night when I was driving back to Toledo in 1998. Had to be atmospheric conditions. Listened for almost the entire trip back.

Ellensburg WA
Normally KDMB Moses Lake (Divine Mercy, Catholic) with a weak to fair signal.

The same was normally heard in Yakima as well, but of course very much variable. KAGU Spokane was heard once with classical and an ID during good tropo...which is rare in central WA.

KNAU Flagstaff AZ (NPR)
KLNE Lexington NE (NPR / NET)
KXNM Encino NM (Variety)
KRBG Umbarger TX (Religion - Radio by Grace)

In NW AR:

KWTU Tulsa, OK (Classical) - strongest with the antenna aimed west

DX:
KNAU Flagstaff, AZ (NPR, News, Classical)
KLNE Lexington, NE (NPR / NET)
KPPW Williston, ND (NPR / Prairie Public)
KLVV Ponca City, OK (contemporary Christian)

Interesting how close KRZA and KGNI are to each other and yet I've only heard the Gunnison station. If we have a good Es season this year, I'm sure KRZA will finally go in the logs. However, to DX 88.7 I will HAVE to go out to the Pioneer Supertuner IIID in my Elantra...we have a K-LOVE translator on 88.5 and KCSH on 88.9, which crunches 88.7 for use on the G5.

Picayune, MS:
WOTB Pearl River, LA (Contemporary Christian music) - strongest signal at my location
