FM Frequency of the Week 2018-19-20: 89.3

Creeping up in the U.S. non-comm band.
What do you/did you/have you received on 89.3, now and then?

East Tennessee: A weak WMKW, Crossville TN sneaks in but usually it's just has from adjacent WOFM (Alr 1)
Retro/other: Really nothing comes to mind.

In the near north Chicago suburbs 89.3 is WNUR the Northwestern University station.

Local WRDV from(where else?) Warminster PA. Listening to Todd Allen's
a capella hour right now. Would Pentatonix or the Pitch Perfect girls be
a good fit for that show?

Almost always Public/NPR WFPL, Louisville, and sometimes with a surprisingly good signal (21kW @ 774' ~76mi.). I've also received Christian Rock "Air1" affiliate KYAI, McKee (London/Corbin/Williamsburg area) on occasion (50kW @ 541' ~75mi.).

Always local Public/NPR WRKF, Baton Rouge (28kW @ 935' ~19mi.)

KPFB, an extremely weak 460 w out of Berkeley. It repeats 94.1 KPFA, also in Berkeley. That's strange. Why would it just repeat KPFA when they are both in Berkeley? KPFA has a strong 59 Kw signal that reaches the entire bay area.

I can't pick up KPFB at all; just splatter from KPOO 89.5 (270 w out of San Francisco). The transmitter is only 14 miles

WRFG occupies that spot in Atlanta. WRFG is Radio Free Georgia, a non commercial donation station. They carry Amy Goodman in the afternoon.

Ellensburg WA

Completely wide open. Do not have any regulars on this channel.
The only non-Es catch I've heard is KAOS Olympia WA (Variety) operated by The Evergreen State College. Barely heard them about a year ago.

KZUM Lincoln NE (Variety)

KUVO is probably my #1 most-wanted on this channel. They should be easy during an Es opening down that way.

KAOS is the lone catch from Yakima, and even then it was in the mountains near Rimrock.

Central Kansas:
No locals, though I can pull in KCUR/KCMO without too many issues (being on a hill helps with that, despite being 150 miles away).

Mason City, IA:
No locals here either. If I can pull in the closest signal to me, KCMP/Northfield (Twin Cities), it’s very, very weak, and fades away fairly quickly.

picked it up...Apparently there are areas of Berkeley that don't get 94.1, though I find that hard to believe. Anyways, it's just a translator. Sometimes they have programming differing from KPFA.

Depending on where you are at, there are two stations fighting it out in my neck of the woods ( San Jose / South Bay area ).

KMTG..."Mustang radio" and operates at Pioneer High School, transmitting at 300 watts. Height is not this stations strong point, but it can get out

The other ( and one of my Favorites ) is KOHL, out of Fremont. Its a very weak station pumping out an effective radiated power output of 250 watts ( This is with a combined horizontal and vertical transmitter, as each one is separate ). They do have some height ( 124 meters ), but the peaks of black mountain, block the signal the further south and east you go. Those across the bay ( Sunnyvale / Mountain View / Santa Clara) can listen much better than those of use down in San Jose, as the signal is very much dependent on line of sight. About half of western San Jose can pick up the signal, leaving the eastern portion knulled out ( including parts of Milpitas ). The transmitter stick is not very tall ( about 15ft-20ft ), so this adds to the trouble.
