FM Frequency of the Week 2018-19-20: 92.7

Continuing with the traditional US Class A's.
East Tennessee: Most of the time it's distant Contemporary Christian rimshot WIJV, Harriman. This station has always had a translator in Knoxville (at least since 2011), but now Knoxville listeners are served by a translator on 94.7 which "translates" WIFA-1240. Very frequently, the next closest station, WMIK, Middlesboro, KY will be heard instead.

Retro/other: Dayton, OH area: Frequently I received WZBD, Berne, IN.

Retro DX Clip of the week: Focusing on the Great Indiana Frequency Swap of 1986. In order to open an allocation in Muncie at 104.9 (which had several competing applications and took years), the Hartford City allocation had to be moved to another frequency (why not buy it and move it in? That would seem to have made sense. Anyway, to allow 104.9 to come on the air, Hartford City had to be moved to 93.5. But wait, there's more! WZWZ, Kokomo would have to swap places with WXUS, Lafayette, Indiana which was on 92.7. This clip is has the flip to 92.7

In the near north Chicago suburbs WCPY Arlington Heights, Il occupies this frequency with a decent signal.

Retro/other: Back in the mid 1960s the call letters of this station were WNWC and I believe they were the first FM station to play any Rock & Roll in the Chicago area. From 7PM to midnight they played all Top 40 music.

Smith County, Texas, 5 miles NW of Tyler:

Typically a weak to moderate signal from CHR Pop KISY "92.7 KISS-FM" Blossom, TX 29kW @ 106.7m HAAT, serving the Paris, TX - Hugo, OK area of the Red River. I've also logged the 82 watt Spanish religious LPFM KVRL-LP from neighboring Longview on two occasions. I recently caught KIVY-FM, from south of me in Crockett, TX, for the first time in several months. Programs new country as "KIVY 92.7 FM". 50kW @ 150m HAAT. It used to be a more regular visitor to Smith County, but not in recent months.

Warminster PA(Philly 'burbs):

Usually splatter from local 92.5 WXTU. In tropo, I have heard the 92.7's from Long Island NY(forget the calls) and Rehoboth Beach DE(WGMD).

Far northwest suburban Chicago,,,,

92.7 is WCPY generally with a good signal. As radioman pointed out, they were "first to the party" in the Chicago market playing Top 40 music on the FM band. At first, 1966 IIRC, it was just Friday nights. But by 1969 the station had changed call letters to WEXI, and was fulltime top 40. Fast forward a decade or so, and who could ever forget their run as WSEX. Apparently, however, a lot of people DID forget, because that incarnation came and went.

Around Columbus, Ohio, there are two LPFMs on 92.7, WCRS from Worthington and WEFC, licensed to Galloway but transmitting from west of Hilliard near the Franklin-Madison County line.
WCRS barely makes it to me in the east suburbs and WEFC doesn't get here at all. I imagine there are some areas in the north and northwestern parts of the metro where they interfere with each other.
WHIZ from Zanesville, 40 miles east, is as likely to be heard here in Reynoldsburg as either of the aforementioned two stations. It's Top 40 with the brand Z92. I'm about on the western edge of their signal but it's considerably stronger even a few miles to my east.

Maybe it was the hifalutin sounding announcers on WSEX that did them in. They sounded like they belonged to a University Hot Tub Club, like on the Saturday Night Live skits. Art does imitate life, as we have been told.

My first exposure to WNWC was around 1967 in the ORD area. There was some intermodulation thing going on on that old Zenith Table Radio they had, and WNWC was coming in all over the dial in between stations. Those Zenith Radios were good overall, but they had bad RITOIE/intermodulation rejection. When they were WWMM, I heard them in Mecosta County, Michigan. It was in 1978 I think. The female evening DJ was amazed. It was in a late August or early September tropo opening, when DXing was fun and the band was not overloaded yet.

I don't remember the date that they went Top 40 at night, but I know they were doing it every night by 1967. Then as you say around 1969 they changed the calls to WEXI fulltime Top 40 for a year or so until a Cadillac dealer bought the station and changed it to beautiful music.

Lexington, KY:
Nothing due to the proximity of local country flamethrower on 92.9 - WLXX, Lexington (100 kW @ 850' ~4 mi.)

Ellensburg WA
