FM Frequency of the Week 2018-19-20: 98.3

Continuing with the U.S. traditional Class A FM frequencies. This week: 98.3.
East Tennessee: Knoxville/Sevierville. The under-powered, under-towered WMTY, Sweetwater which used to simulcast The True Oldies Channel on AM 670 before the AM towers went away. It has a reasonable signal in Blount County. In Sevier County, it's LPFM WJQJ.

E-Skip reception of KATR, Otis, Colorado a couple of years ago

Retro/other: Dayton and Western Ohio: In Dayton, 98.3 is Kettering Fairmont High School's WKET. Otherwise WPKO, Bellefontaine, OH is a semi-local, or WZZY, Winchester IN. Once in a while, WKNA, Logan, OH (short spaced to Bellefontaine) has been known to make it in.

Something new, Bob Hawkins Global Tuners receiver in Edinburgh IN (same place as the Edinburgh SDR). The regular users are keeping track, and on 98.3, it's WQXE, Elizabethton KY and WZRL, Plainfield IN.

RETRO DX CLIP OF THE WEEK: Even if you don't usually listen to these, check this one out. WIUC, Winchester, Indiana plays the music boxes right before sign on. http://46124.info/FM/Indiana/IN Winchester 98.3 1978 WIUC.mp3

In the near north Chicago suburbs I get a mixture of two LPFM's depending on the day. WGHC which transmits from the north side of the city and WQRG which I think is an Asian format transmitting I think from Wheeling, Il or there abouts.

Thanks for the tip. IMHO, the Edinburgh receiver is already one of the best on the North America SDRs.

Crystal Lake, IL....

98.3 is usually WRLR. an LPFM licensed to Round Lake, IL. Very weak signal when its in. Stick is about 15 miles east-northeast of me/

Mason City, IA: Fair to weak signal from KQYB/Spring Grove, MN (La Crosse area). About 45 miles SW of my location, KWQW/Boone (Des Moines) starts to make some noise. (Honestly still surprised they’re airing classic hip hop; thought they would’ve changed by now.)

Central KS: Pretty good signal from KQZQ/Kiowa (right along the Oklahoma line), even though they’re about 90-100 miles SW of my location.
