FM Frequency of the Week 2018-19: 92.3

What do you hear on 92.3?

Hello everyone! It's been awhile since we've covered the FM band, so why not now? So much has changed since we roamed the FM dial last, I thought it was time for a new round. Thanks Cybedad for the encouragement.

I made the executive decision to not go straight from 88-108, and do the commercial Class B/C frequencies first (I may pair a non-comm and commercial frequency some weeks, let me know what you think. As Cyberdad did with AM FOTW, I'd love to hear about your retro dial, other locations, etc, particularly way back before all the LPFMs, translators, 80-90 dropins and everyone running 24/7. E-Skip catches too.

So onto 92.3. In East Tennessee, (Knoxville-Sevierville area) translators for WETR, (W222BA) and WNPC (W222AN) can be heard depending where you are in the area. WETR's translator is apparently on Sharps Ridge. WDEF, Chattanooga still fills in all the gaps and that was what one would hear before the translators.

RETRO/OTHER: Dayton, Ohio area. Mostly WCOL with an occasional visit from WTTS, Bloomington--er, Trafalgar. .
Lafayette, IN area. When I lived there in the 80s and 90s, it was WTTS most of the time, buy WYIN, Hammond, IN came in frequently. They were Urban Gospel at the time (it was said that the best unsigned talent in the country could be heard on their various church services).

Classic DX recording: WTTV, Bloomington signing off in 1967: http://46124.info/FM/Indiana/IN Bloomington 92.3 1967 WTTV.mp3. This from Bob Hawkins' collection which can be heard here: http://46124.info/FM/.

In Manistee, MI, it should be WBNZ Frankfort, MI. However, that station has been on and off for years. In its absence, I've been able to get the following:
KETX Livingston, TX
KMYY Rayville, LA
KMZE Woodward, OK
WCMQ Hialeah, FL
WJMQ Clintonville, WI
WJPD Ishpeming, MI
WOSQ Spencer, WI
WPWX Hammond, IN
WSGA Hinesville, GA
WWKA Orlando, FL
Most common of those are WJPD and WJMQ

Yakima WA
Usually a dogfight between KZUS Ephrata (Regional Mexican) and K222BP Prosser (relaying KOLU with Rel programming). KGON Portland makes rare appearances in aircraft/tropo scatter (Classic Rock). This is an open channel here, thus plenty of Es catches made. They are listed below, date being the first catch of that station. Some stations I've heard several times since.
KEZO Omaha NE (Classic Rock, 5/26/2014)
KIJN Farwell TX (Religious, 6/17/14 - And keep in mind, I've never heard the main parallel...KJRT-88.3! They should be possible if I'm getting the 94.1/95.7 Amarillo, which happens at least once a summer.)
KFTI Newton KS (Classic Country, 6/23/14 - now KKGQ)
KBRY Sargent NE (Country, 6/23/14)
KRST Albuquerque NM (Country, 6/29/14)
KMOZ Grand Junction CO (Country, 7/7/14)
KTAR Glendale AZ (News/Talk, 7/10/14)
KOMP Las Vegas NV (Rock, 7/20/14)
KHHT Los Angeles CA (Rhythmic Oldies, 7/20/14 - now KRRL, 'Real 92.3' hip hop)
XHMMF Mexicali BCN (Spanish, Grupera, 5/21/17)
KYOY Hillsdale WY (Classic Hits, during the super 6/30/17 opening which resulted in 2-hop FM skip to TX)
KOFX El Paso TX (Oldies, 7/12/18)

Wanted on this frequency...
KKHQ Oelwein IA (I have heard Top 40 mixing with KEZO on two different openings, but the pop station has never IDed. I'm sure it was them. This would be long skip - 1460ish miles.)
KYUS Miles City MT (750-ish miles but would be nice if a ND/MB Es cloud would shorten. I can't remember when I got Saskatchewan last. I've only had MT on meteor scatter.)
KQRQ Rapid City SD (Classic Hits, and I've heard a couple from Rapid City but never them. South Dakota openings have been quite rare over the past few years.)

Kudos to gr8oldies for re-starting this series..,

Here northwest of Chicago, 92.3 is normally a very weak WPWX from Hammond, IN. 50kw @ 500', but directional with a pattern that doesn't favor me. You don't have to go very far to my southeast to get a comfortably listenable signal, however.

Very true as I am about 30 miles SE of you and I hear WPWX just fine.

Dominating signal of Baltimore's urban "92Q" WERQ in Annapolis, MD. Their HD signal carries Asian programming on HD2, and a simulcast of sister WOLB 1010 on HD3 with urban talk days/urban oldies nights.

Though I am nowhere near a knowledgeable FM DXer, 92.3 remains the only FM pre-set on my Chrysler. That's because one day driving around near Shamokin PA, I was fascinated with and steering-wheel thumping to this relatively new station called Hanna-FM. The Susquehanna's Greatest Hits.
I could list music segues galore. But suffice it to say that WHNA-FM plays just about every up-tempo hit song from the late 60's to maybe 1997. Relentlessly. Neil Diamond to Hanson, and everything in between. They're owned by some company that owns about 6 stations in central PA.

Here at home, they're kinda spotty. They mix with a new translator south of here, which carries the AM station WRAW Reading. I've always liked the lilt and energy of the Spanish/Tropical format even though the words I understand in Spanish could be counted on one hand without any danger of using too many fingers on the other hand. But WRAW (W222BY) has spots in English. That makes things confusing in the 'fringe' area of the two stations.

One frequency. Two stations. No waiting, hi!

In Houston, it's KETX in Livingston, TX all day with classic hits. An interesting small-town focussed station, can hear a swap-shop program in the mornings. I've also heard alternative WZRH in the New Orleans area via tropo.

I heard KETX on a visit to the Livingtson area last year (my wife lived there for several years). I didn't hear much other than on the weekend but seemed to be a very unfamiliar playlist

It sucks being in a valley ( surrounded by mountains and hills ), and not up high atop a mountain where FM signals battle it out.

For me, in San Jose, 92.3 is KSJO Bolly ( Once, one of the greatest Rock stations in the south Bay is now Bollywood )

Here in Wood Dale, IL in the near NW suburb of Chicago, it's WPWX dominating the frequency from their Burnham, IL transmitter. Their signal is fairly good at my location. The only other station I ever logged on 92.3 is WKRR from Asheboro, NC during an e-skip.

Unless by some technical difficulty that WWKA goes off the air it's k 923 from Orlando all the time. I have heard it to almost Brandon FL, as far south as Palm Bay with drivable signal and as far north as ST. Augustine.

Same here, I'm in a "bowl" surrounded by mountains. Unless I get on a mountain, DX conditions are pretty rare.

@ Formula 72 & Gr8Oldies and those 'valley' conditions ....

I gotta pass along a great Yogi Berra-ish line from a buddy of mine who visited with another NYC DX pal. They brought me a brand new GE Superadio 2 as a birthday gift! Naturally, the three of us wound up DXing at the kitchen table in my place in Minersville PA.
Listed at 'Elevation 750 ft', Minersville occupies a relatively deep 'hole' in the region vis-a-vis other towns. It even has a stream plus traintracks, so you know it's low-lying.
John and I were seeing what came in on my Lafayette HA 600 with the 4-foot loop. Vinny, the most accomplished FM DXer of our group of four back in Queens, was breaking in the GE SR II.
All he got on FM with this nice new radio -- the ink might've still been a bit wet on its manual -- were locals T-102 and Magic 105.5 Tamaqua.
'What a great place for FM DX!' Vinny said, his eyes agleam. 'Nothing comes in!'
