FM Frequency of the Week 2018-19: 94.5

Up the dial to the Class B/C Frequency of 94.5? What do/did/have you received there?

East Tennessee: A relatively clear frequency with not much around us on it. WMXL, Lexington, KY makes it in frequently, and I've picked up what is most likely WPTI, Eden NC (Greensboro/Winston Salem area) carrying Rush Limbaugh on occasion. There was a pirate in Maynardsville TN for several years on 94.5 which operated very much out in the open, with clearly labeled offices and studios and a very visible campaign for a new tower. That operation announced that "it had purchased by a company up north" and would be going online only just about the time John Pirlkle took back his 94.3 after the lease with South Central broadcasting expired. Hmm, coincidence?

Retro/other: Dayton, Ohio area. Usually iHeart...err the Aloha Trust's WYBB (former WLQT, WDKF, WDOL, etc). It's not unusual to pick up WMXL especially in the southern part of the metro interfering with the signal. Lafayette area: WLRW, Champaign, IL.

Here it's 'Yakima's Rock Station, 94.5 KATS-FM'. 100KW, all the time, at 6 miles. I've only heard them off the air once, one Saturday morning in September 2014. That morning, I heard KRXY Shelton WA (Hot AC), CFBT Vancouver BC (CHR) and KHTQ Hayden ID (Rock) all for new logs. They've never been heard since, because, you know, KATS hasn't been off!
Their pattern goes way into the Columbia Basin, as they can be heard in Moses Lake weakly. I once heard them in Bothell, but they are almost never logged in western WA, with the KTTH translator, CFBT and KRXY mucking their way on 94.5 mhz. Down near Tri-Cities, K233CJ Walla Walla (Fox Sports) interferes with KATS.

I did hear some Es prior to 2013 when I lived north of Seattle. Logs below:
KRFD Merino CO (now KCGC, Country)
KLIQ Hastings NE (Adult Contemporary)
KOOL-FM Phoenix AZ (Classic Hits)
KXLI Las Vegas (logged as KVBE, The Vibe)

Don't think I'll have a lot of luck with 94.5 up in Ellensburg either. KATS is static-filled at 30 miles with multipath from Manastash and Umtanum Ridge, but the signal is too 'strong' for most e-skip to make it through. Radio Locator shows the grade A pattern going right through Kittitas County along with Yakima County. KATS maintains a translator on 94.3 (K232CV) in Ellensburg.
 
Here in the Valley of the Jolly Green Giant (Le Sueur, MN) its KSTP FM Minneapolis (KS95)

If its really humid then KKEZ Ft Dodge, IA comes in
 
Far northwest suburban Chicago... On a REALLY good radio, you might get WKTI (or whatever it is now) from Milwaukee.
 
Meriden, CT: A weak WERB, Berlin, jammed between WYBC New Haven (94.3) and WMAS Springfield, MA (94.7). WERB is a high school station with students usually playing music recorded before they were born -- heavy on classic pop, rock and even country. They probably don't have any choice in the matter.
 
We have a high school station like that here in Knoxville and they just celebrated a milestone anniversary. They play oldies, of course before they (and in some case their parents) were born. I imagine it would be difficult to manage students playing today's current hits with having to make sure you always had the clean versions.

94.5 is a very interesting frequency for me. There are four stations that can come in and out depending on conditions:
WCEN Hemlock, MI (Country)
WKTI Milwaukee, MI (Sports, was Country)
WRJO Eagle River, WI (Classic Hits)
WTNR Holland, MI (Country [for now], flipping to something else in the next few weeks)
Until a few weeks ago, 3/4 of these stations were country, so it would be very hard to tell them apart.

Other catches include:
CJAB Saguenay, QC (French CHR)
CKCW Moncton, NB (Hot Adult Contemporary)
KSMB Lafayette, LA (Contemporary Hits)
KSTP St. Paul, MN (Hot Adult Contemporary)
KTBZ Houston, TX (Alternative)
WARO Naples, FL (Classic Rock)
WJZD Long Beach, MS (Urban Adult Contemporary)
WPST Trenton, NJ (Contemporary Hits)
WSPX Bowman, SC (Gospel)
WTMB Tomah, WI (Classic Rock)
WYPV Mackinaw City, MI (Talk)

I'm not sure if the WKTI call letters are still in use. Or if they are, how long they'll stay. They've been the sister station of WTMJ (620), and have been that since day one when they came on the air. But now that Good Karma Broadcasting has bought WTMJ/WKTI from Scripps (who took over The Journal Company a few years back). WKTI is simulcasting WAUK (540).

My GUESS is that Good Karma will migrate the WAUK "ESPN Milwaukee" format completely to their new full signal on 94.5 and turn 540 into either paid religion or some type of ethnic programming. (Which is what has been on Milwaukee's 540 for most of its existence).
