FM Frequency of the Week 2018-19: 94.9

Back again for our survey of the commercial B/C frequencies.

What do or did you get on 94.9?

Locally in East TN, it's WAEZ, Greenville TN "Electric 94-9" serving the Tri-Cities (Bristol/Johnson City/Kingsport) area with the latest hits. Good signal but no ratings in Knoxville. The WAEZ calls were on a beautiful music station in Akron in the 70s and 80s on 97.5...the present day WONE-FM.

Retro/other: Dayton, Ohio was always the Fairfield station in whatever incarnation it was (currently WREW, formerly WMOJ (Jammin' Oldies), WVAE (Smooth Jazz) and several others. Get a little north of town and WONB, Ada, OH (Ohio Northern University). I managed to get WQMX, Medina, OH once. Lafayette, IN: The present-day WRHK and former WWDZ, Danville IL (at the time part of a 2 or 3 station simulcast as Z95/Z108.

Here's a little bit of WCNW-FM, Fairfield OH from 1967 from Bob Hawkins website: http://46124.info/FM/Ohio/OH Fairfield 94.9 1967 WCNW.mp3

In the Valley of the Jolly Green Giant (Le Sueur, MN)
K235BH Mankato (translator of KTIS Minneapolis Contemporary Christian (non-commercial))
or
KMXK St Cloud (Mix 94.9)

94.9 here is one of my most interesting frequencies. Most radios get splatter from our local 95.1 (WSSX in Charleston), but on a good radio I’ve gotten several varied stations. WVCO Loris (beach music serving the Myrtle Beach area) is the most common here. But I have also heard Atlanta once or twice (country), and I’ve heard Roanoke, VA’s WSLC multiple times. For being close to 300 miles out, that signal carries. I’ve heard Tampa multiple times here during the summer. Miami once or twice as well.

So does WSLQ on 99.1 and WVTF on 89.1. All 3 of those Poor Mountain signals (west of Roanoke) can be heard at least 100 miles out on a normal day.

Here in Bremerton, WA, it's KUOW NPR/public radio from across the Puget Sound in Seattle. Unlike most of the other area radio stations in the market that transmit from Cougar or Tiger Mountain, KUOW transmits within the city of Seattle on Capitol Hill, so it's a solid signal here into Bremerton.

94.9 in Yakima is semi-local KIOK Richland (The Wolf) operating at 100,000 watts with country. If I'm up on a high hill I can hear KUOW Seattle (NPR) in the right spot; KUOW was also heard here when KIOK was off briefly due to a wildfire in August. Too bad there wasn't any Es that day.
If Eskip is strong enough, it can be heard on 94.9. Loggings made include:

KNCK Concordia KS (Hot AC)
KBIM-FM Roswell NM (Country)
KMXZ Tucson AZ (Adult Contemporary)
KBZT San Diego (Alternative)
KWYK Aztec NM (Hot AC)

Of course, any new Eskip loggings in 2019 on this channel are much appreciated!

94.9 is home to local WKZC Scottville (country). It's supposedly 17kW from 13 miles away, but I've gotten around it several times during strong tropo.

These catches include:
KQDS Duluth, MN (Classic rock)
W235AG Sheboygan, WI (Religious // VCY America)
WMMQ East Lansing, MI (Classic rock)
WUPZ Chocolay Township, MI (CHR)

Warminster PA(Philly 'burbs):

Ocasionally, a country station from Harrisburg (forget what it's called) would come in tropo. Otherwise, splatter from semi-local 95.1 WZZO from Bethlehem (Lehigh Valley).

KYLD...very strong 30 Kw signal out of San Francisco "WiLD 94.9" rhythmic contemporary...it used to be called "The Bay Area's Party Station"

Central KS:
Good signal from KNCK/Concordia (about 85 miles north).

Mason City, IA:
Fair to poor signal from KCPI/Albert Lea (45 miles away, albeit at 5,000 watts), with KGGO/Des Moines (at 100K watts) also eeking in. Depending on the day (mostly during strong DXing days), both picket fence heavily.
