FM Frequency of the Week 2018-19: 95.1

What do you hear of have you heard on 95.1?

East Tennessee: WBLC translator W236DA, Lenoir City, TN depending where one is in the area (especially in the mountains). I've had several receptions of Goober 95.1, WGGG, Bowling Green, KY.

Retro/other: Dayton, Ohio could show either WAJI, Fort Wayne IN or less often, WXIL, Elizabeth (Wheeling), WV. Once, during a heat wave I got the previously mentioned WGGG. Lafayette, IN was either WAJI or Decatur, IL's WDZQ.

Here's the intro to the news on WXIL in 1977: http://46124.info/FM/West Virginia/WV Elizabeth 95.1 1977 WXIL.mp3

Warminster PA(Philly 'burbs):

Usually semi-local WZZO from Bethlehem. Sometimes in tropo times, WAYV from AC
or WRBS from Baltimore would be heard here as well.

Most of the time, 95.1 is WLST Marinette, WI (Country). At about 90 miles away, it can be easily defeated at times by both Es and Tr.

Catches include:
KQCV Shawnee, OK (Religious Teaching // Bott Radio) [E-skip]
W236BU Traverse City, MI (Public Radio // WCMU-FM)
WAPE Jacksonville, FL (CHR) [E-skip]
WDZQ Decatur, IL (Country)
WFBE Flint, MI (Country)
WIIL Union Grove, WI (Rock)
WSSX Charleston, SC (CHR) [E-skip]

In the Valley of the Jolly Green Giant (Le Sueur, MN) usually nothing

I have caught KUSQ US95 Worthington, MN a couple times...and the closer I get to Mankato (25 miles south of me) it comes in

Same here as what Ryan said. 'Z-Z-O', out of Bethlehem/Allentown. Even at my age, I still enjoy hearing the occasional brain-bending racket coming out of the car speakers. WZZO is a highly rated station in the market.

*Once* I heard WIKZ Chambersburg PA while driving out by Minersville and Pine Grove PA. I'd drive up a hill headed west and hear ZZO. Down the hill it was WIKZ.

* * * * * * *

There had been a time, around 1980, when there was some radio talk about a company simulcasting the AoR 'rock' of the time on WAYV Atlantic City 95.1, WZZO, and WRKI out of Danbury CT. All three were class B signals, and presumably would cover, somewhat in tandem, a good deal of the NYC market -- more of the place than the Class A 107.1 quadcast would do. But nothing ever came of it.

* * * * * * *

The radio gang did the audio portion -- she did the soldering work -- for a gal who used a small transmitter as a final exam for an electronics school. She said the class was really enjoying the cassette of stuff we gave her as 'possible uses' for such a device. There was a talking house segment with three separate talking houses calling each other drunks, sluts, scam artists and other reprobates ..... A drug-check stop of her by 2 cops and then some ambulance-chasing lawyer who heard her broadcast ('I'm here to help, Miss. Here's my business card. Have a cigar. Here's my toupee. Just sign right here; it's merely a formality') ...... A nursery-monitor usage during which she left for an errand and heard her kids lighting up smokes in the house and breaking into the liquor cabinet ('AHAAA! Got youse!' ......
Anyway, she said that one the the biggest laughs she got was a :02 second clip, when she was talking about a small community station. Such a station could play Beautiful Music (a clip of The Frank Chacksfield Orchestra) all the way down to the noisiest and worst music ever recorded.
The separator 'Z- Z - O' was all that was needed for that bit.

Far northwest suburban Chicago....

95.1 is WIIL from Kenosha, WI. WI-IL, Wisconsin-Illinois...get it? The stick is about five miles north of the state line, shared with co-owned WLIP (1050 AM). Its actually one of the better signals around here, and I hear it frequently playing in local businesses.

Kenosha, WI- Local WIIL, licensed to Union Grove, WI. Originally WLIP-FM, changed to WJZQ for many years playing Rock and then Top 40. Their stick is about 5 miles from me.

Back a few years ago, when owner-at-the-time Next Media found themselves with too many stations in the Chicago market, they changed the COL from Kenosha to Union Grove. As the 4th largest city in Wisconsin @ about 100,000 (likely soon to become 3rd), Kenosha has only one AM, one FM, and one TV licensed to it (not counting 1 translator and 1 LPFM). I guess that's what happens when you're sitting between Milwaukee and Chicago.

On the rare occasion that WIIL is off the air, WLST Marinette, WI and WDZQ Decatur, IL have commonly been received here.

Yakima, WA - My best and most-open frequency...by far. Nothing comes in on 95.1 during dead band. If you travel 20 miles away into the mountains above Rimrock, you'll get a faint KITI Winlock WA (Hot AC, 420w) depending on elevation and line of sight. This channel is an Es and meteor scatter paradise when the time comes. And I've heard a lot of stations in the past, all e-skip unless marked:

KLTW Prineville OR (now on 95.7, but was heard several years ago visiting family. Adult Contemporary, now Adult Hits. TROPO)
KATC Colorado Springs CO (Country)
KCGY Laramie WY (Country)
KBVB Barnesville MN (Country)
KHOP Modesto CA (CHR / heard on both Es and METEOR SCATTER)
KLQT Corrales NM (Was CHR as 'Channel 95.1,' now KOLZ as Hot 95.1, Rhythmic Oldies. I can always rely on hearing this one every summer.)
KICT Wichita KS (Rock)
KTTI Yuma AZ (Country - Another station that's reliable as dirt, at least 2 or 3 times a summer. Often in alone with KLJZ-93.1.)
KFRG San Bernardino CA (Country)
KNYE Pahrump NV (Variety)
CHVN Winnipeg MB (Christian)
KUSQ Worthington MN (Country)
KOAI Sun City West AZ (Soft AC, now Classic Hits)
KMMS-FM Bozeman MT (Adult Album Alternative / METEOR SCATTER)
CFMC Saskatoon SK (CHR / METEOR SCATTER)
KBBY Ventura CA (Adult Contemporary)
KNUW Santa Clara NM (Hot AC)

Wanted:
KRKR Waverly NE (MyBridge. This one has gotten away from me twice in the past 5-6 years. Always faded before the ID could be heard. Format match, but no ID. Maybe 2019 will be different.)
KSQY Deadwood SD (Rock. Not having decent openings to Rapid City hasn't helped, either.)
KMLY Gonzales CA (Regional Mexican. This was likely the station I heard twice, in 2015 and 2018, with Spanish programming. It's 6000 watts near Monterey and definitely doable if I can get some short skip down that way.)
KKNN Delta CO (Rock. I can't believe I've never heard this one, either. Have heard Montrose and Grand Junction several times over the years, even logged their former 200 WATT simulcast on 101.1, KDBN Parachute. But never this 100 KW blaster. Maybe it will finally work out in 2019.)

95.1 here is probably our most dominant local in Charleston, top 40 WSSX (95SX). They never get knocked off the air for maintenance. They have a pretty good signal for 60-75 miles around Charleston. If you go to Beaufort or somewhere nearby, you can hear the skip from WAPE-FM Jacksonville. WNKS Charlotte is dominant across northern SC.

Augusta also has a news-talk station on 95.1 that was squeezed in during the 1980s.

@ Crainbebo :

I see by your fine 95.1 list that there aren't any 'W' calls. Have you heard many 'W' calls overall on FM out your way?

(I think, incidentally, that you may have more FM stations logged on 95.1 that I have from the entire dial, hi)

WBJI-98.3 MN
WIAL-94.1 WI
WWJO-98.1 MN
(and WDAY-93.7 ND logged on the west side of the state, now KOYY). All four are in single-hop range, no doubles involved.

Central KS:
Clear signal from KICT/Wichita

Mason City, IA:
Weak to non-existent signal from KCZE/New Hampton. DXing and even outside of it (mostly to the north and west of my location), I can pull in KUSQ/Worthington, MN.
