FM Frequency of the Week 2018-19: 98.5

Retro-rocking through the traditional U.S. Class B/C Frequencies on the FM half of your dial.

What do you/did you receive on 98.5?

East Tennessee: Typically the Tri-Cities WTFM, Kingsport. WKSW (calls that were in Springfield, OH for a long time), Cookeville is certainly doable.

Retro/other: Dayton, OH area, WRRM, "Warm 98" Cincinnati. Further north, WNWN "Stereo Country 98" was a frequent visitor from Coldwater, Michigan

Lafayette, IN area: WWVR (may have been different calls in the 80s or 90s) Paris IL.

Retro DX Clip of the week: WANG, Coldwater, Michigan from 1977 signing on along with WTVB http://46124.info/FM/Michigan/MI Coldwater 98.5 1969 WANG.mp3

and as WNWN in 1978 http://46124.info/FM/Michigan/MI Coldwater 98.5 1978 WNWN.mp3

In Atlanta, that would be WSB's FM station B98.5. At one time they were a major Top 40 station but now they are "80's, 90's, and now" which, to me, sounds like a mix of oldies and hip-hop.
Don't know how they are doing ratings-wise but they're selling spots. They once did a remote from a Good Will store which I thought was odd since Good Will is a charity operation.

Warminster PA(Philly 'burbs):
Usually an FM translator of WNPV(AM 1440) in Lansdale PA. Others I have heard here include
WBBO(B-98.5, top 40) from Asbury Park NJ, and WYCR from Hanover PA(Central PA, around Lancaster).

Central Baldwin County, Alabama:

This is quite a difficult frequency. 100 kW WYCT Pensacola is on 98.7 and 40 kW WLVM Mobile is on 98.3.

That close spacing hasn't stopped 100 kW WFSY Panama City from bubbling up occasionally during summer tropo ducting in the past, however. It's about 120 miles away.

About a year ago now, WYCT turned their HD back on, but at higher power, so the odds of hearing anything here are slimmer now than they used to be. But I have heard WFSY at least once since the HD arrived.

I've never heard any other station on this frequency from this location.

Yakima WA

Next to KMNA-98.7, but they are down in Mabton so 98.5 isn't as much of a first-adjacent problem. Nothing stays in for more than brief periods: KEYG Grand Coulee WA (Classic Rock) or CIOC Victoria BC (Adult Contemporary), which used to be my fuzzy semi-local living in the Puget Sound area. Logged KNBQ Central Park WA (K-LOVE) as well back in 2015, they were testing as North Pole Radio at the time. Yes, Christmas music in September.

I've done relatively well, Eskip-wise.
KLUC Las Vegas NV (Top 40)
KUFX San Jose CA (Classic Rock - quite short for sporadic-E, less than 650 miles)
KABG Santa Fe NM (Classic Hits)
KHAQ Maxwell NE (Classic Rock)
KTIS Minneapolis MN (Christian Contemporary - my lone log from Minneapolis, at 1314 miles. I hope we'll have another big opening this year like 7/15/14, where the upper Midwest is alive and well, and this time, clean up multiple MSP FMs.)
KIFX Roosevelt UT (Adult Contemporary - another short one)
K253BR San Luis Obispo CA (Adult Contemporary - B93.7 and B98.5. 250W)
KOLS-LP Oakhurst CA (EWTN - 100W!! Logged May 2017, swapping with...)
KDFO Delano CA (Classic Rock)
KDES Cathedral City CA (Country)
XHSAP Agua Prieta SON (Regional Mexican)

Most-wanted FM target is KYGO Denver, never heard and it's a 100KW blaster.

Mason City, IA:
Most of the time, it is a fairly weak KOEL/Cedar Falls. Can somewhat receive KTIS/Minneapolis, depending on location.

Central KS:
Formerly got KSAJ/Abilene with a constantly clear signal (stick was 20 miles straight north of my house). Since their move to Topeka in 2017, the signal is a lot weaker than what it used to, though can still somewhat receive it about 85 miles away on a hill, and is no longer a local.

KRXQ (50 Kw) Sacramento active/classic rock. I sometimes have trouble picking up this station. The signal I should be getting, but can't due to the Sunol Grade, is KUFX, a 10 Kw classic rock station out of San Jose.

I picked up K-Fox tonight. It must be the weather conditions, as I picked up a whole bunch of FM's I normally wouldn't. Warm day, no fog at night...maybe that had something to do with it
