FM Frequency of the Week 2018-19: 98.7

What do you get on 98.7?

East Tennessee (Knoxville/Sevierville). Most of the time, rimshot WOKI (News-Talk 98.7) which remains the market’s premier news-talker, even on a much reduced signal compared to those heady days on the powerhouse 100.3, which was LMAed with owner John Pirkle until the Citadel bankruptcy ended that lease. Once in a while, tropo will bring WKDQ, Liberty, KY underneath. One logging of WSMW, “Simon 98.7”, Greensboro NC in Sevierville.

Retro/other: Dayton, Ohio. A fairly open frequency. Most often WQME, Anderson, IN with an occasional appearance of WYRO, MacArthur, Ohio. Detroit can make it in occasionally.

Lafayette, IN: Before what is now WASK-FM signed on (as ill-fated Alternative rocker WIIZ), Anderson IN made it in most of the time with an occasional WFMT appearance.

DX Clip of the week: Here’s the first day of WQME: http://46124.info/FM/Indiana/IN Anderson 98.7 1990 WQME First Day.mp3

Warminster PA(Philly 'burbs):
Usually splatter from local 98.9 WUSL("Power 99"). Tropo situations usually bring us
WEPN-FM(ESPN Radio) from NYC, WMZQ(country station) from DC, or WCZT("98.7 the Coast") from
the Jersey Shore.

Yakima WA

Local KMNA Mabton WA (Regional Mexican), about 80% unnullable. But very strong Eskip has wiped them out before! One time they were off during a power outage, and KUPL Portland faded in on 98.7 (Country).

Eskip logs listed:
KMVP Glendale AZ (ESPN - 6/23/15 - wiped out local!!)
KSNM Truth or Consequences NM (Classic Hits, in the big 6/30/17 opening. KMNA was off the air, thank goodness. Also had KMVP earlier that afternoon.)
KPRF Amarillo TX (Classic Rock, in the same 6/30/17 opening, but in the evening. They had just flipped to Lonestar from JACK 24 hours prior.)

98.7 will be easier to DX when I move to Ellensburg in September 2019. Of course anything in Eskip range is wanted, including KYSR Los Angeles (ALT).

Far northwest Chicago suburbs, 98.7 is WFMT. Classical music with one of the better Chicago FM signals. In the 1970s, WGN's (Tribune Company's) attempt to purchase WFMT was shot down by the FCC. To this day, I've wondered what the local FM dial would be like if THAT had been allowed to go through. Today, WFMT is owned by the local PBS television broadcaster, but operates commercially.

Oh, and don't forget WNOR(99 Rock) from Norfolk, VA.

Mason City, IA:
KSMA/Osage

Central KS:
Fairly decent signal from KNSS-FM/Clearwater. Up until KSAJ moved to Topeka in 2017, it was always a hard signal to get (since their stick is based south of Wichita, while ‘SAJ’s was about 20 miles due straight north of my house).
