FM Frequency of the Week 2018-19: 99.5

Time again for another trip down the dial of the former Class B/C frequencies. What do or did you get on 99.5?

East Tennessee (Knoxville-Sevierville): A tossup between WYGO, Madisonville, TN and WKDP, Corbin, KY.

Retro/other: Dayton, Ohio: A weak WGAR at times, or sometimes WAOL (Ripley OH) or WZPL

Lafayette, IN in the 90s—WZPL if it could get past 1st adjacent WSHW. I don’t remember getting US99 from Chicago but it certainly would have been doable.

Warminster PA(Philly 'burbs):
Usually semi-local WJBR(Hot AC station) from Wilmington DE. Tropo has brought us WBAI from
NYC and WGAY(now iHeart Top 40 WIHT, "Hot 99.5") from DC.
 
In the Valley of the Jolly Green Giant (Le Sueur, MN...for two more weeks) ;)

KSJN Minneapolis
Owned by Minnesota Public Radio..Classical music

But I remember 99.5 as WLOL "Get me up..WLOL" which was a CHR station
 
Mason City, IA:
Very faint pickup of KSJN/Minneapolis (can mostly be received outside of town, away from RF interference). Can also get KDAO/Eldora, IA.

Central KS:
When I was younger, I would sometimes get KRWV/Emporia before they moved to 96.1 years ago. Now, I can somewhat pickup KHAZ/Hays.

Newark, NJ area. Local WBAI New York City. Tropo brings in WJBR from Wilmington, DE, if carefully nulled. WJBR takes over on an HD radio during tropo as well
 
Yakima WA

IBOC from KHHK-99.7. Strong Es can defeat it, but not often.
If I go up in elevation, I'll likely hear KZLY Ione OR (Regional Mexican) or KQBG Rock Island WA (Hot AC). KZZL Pullman (Country) was heard here on tropo prior to KHHK going HD. I also have KWJJ Portland OR (Country, The Wolf) in the logbook from my romps above 5,000 feet west of Yakima.

Fun fact: You and some of the other guys here may already know this. WUSN's predecessor, WEFM on 99.5 was the first FM station in America to broadcast in stereo. 1961. Zenith Radio Corporation owned the station and was testing its new stereo multiplex system. Format at the time was classical music. Even without that historic event, WEFM was already a recognized pioneer on the FM band. If I'm not mistaken, WEFM first went on the air in 1939.

Thanks for bringing that up. Brings back fine memories for me as my dad used to listen to it and WFMF which I'm sure you remember. Just after the dawn of Rock & Roll I developed a liking for some classical music because he always had it on.

On a good tropo day here in Bremerton, WA, KWJJ from Portland, OR tries to squeeze in.
 
Yes, when I lived on the westside of the state, occasionally I'd hear KWJJ Portland in tropo. Usually they were weaker than KXL (ex-KUFO) or KINK whenever the tropo was hot towards Oregon, however. Up around east Marysville and on the Edmonds waterfront, I'd often hear CBCV-FM1 Metchosin/Sooke, with only 64 watts of power (// CBCV 90.5). They are up on a decent hill however.

Oh yeah.... WFMF, later to become WLOO with the same format. And don't forget at 10PM "The Hour in the Middle of the Evening" (Comprised of slower-than-usual beautiful music....launched by a recording of a guy whistling a slower version the same tune as "Mack the Knife"). I spent a year and half working for Ed Walters who was Sales Manager at "FM 100", and I believe also had a piece of the place.
 
From Canyon Lake, TX: 99.5 KISS Rocks San Antonio. That station has quite a legacy dating back to 1970 in the AOR format. Great signal too: I’ve never heard anything else on that frequency here.
