FM Frequency of the Week - 87.9 MHz

Now that this was kinda bumped.....my wife and I were out of town last week, and on the car radio (during strong tropo from Ocala, where we were, to Miami area) there was a Spanish ballad on 87.9. Any idea where this was? West Palm Beach?

Also last month, during strong E-skip to MI/OH/etc. (mixed with strong-ish Tropo to central/north FL) was some conspiracy talk on 87.9. Any idea who this was?

I'm now hearing a neighbour's telephone line, of all things, on 87.9 (hey, that rhymes, sort of) in my Mum's area. The sound quality is way too clean for it to be coming through a pickup coil. It sounds like someone took a Part-68 box and connected its output to the transmitter, since I can even hear the ringing voltage and calling party identification data bursts. If I turn the volume way up during the idle period between calls, I can hear a noticeable 60-cycle humming; can't tell if that's the power supply the transmitter is connected to or the power system at the local CO. If this is somebody with authority doing an actual surveillance wiretap they sure are being pretty sloppy about it! Probably just some smart--s kid playing with some equipment and his phone line, but I've been wrong before.

Don't know if our little "pirate" I mentioned earlier is still operating near the apartment complex, since as of about a month ago I'm no longer a tenant. I might just cruise on through there one of these days with my handy NS-HD01 and check it out.

[size=8pt]Moral of the story: [red]BE DAMNED CAREFUL WHAT YOU SAY OVER THE PHONE!!![/red] Every single word of every call you make or get could very well be going out over the airwaves in clear FM, over frequencies that probably 99% of the basic consumer radio sets in existence can pick up! If you don't know why this can be (read: is) a problem, well, then I can't explain it to you.

In the Como, WI area (halfway between Lake Geneva & Delavan, WI) there is a pirate on 87.9 with quite a whopping signal. I've heard it in the car as far away as about 7 miles. It can be heard as far west as Delavan Lake & east to the edge of the city limits of Lake Geneva. I even hear it as I pass through Lynn township on my way to & from work in Fontana. WKQX (Chicago)'s 87.75 alternative music signal doesn't seen to bother it.

It's programming is mostly Alex Jones. Maybe that's cd637299's conspiracy talk guy.

Before 6/12/09, Chicago's then WLFM & Milwaukee's WITI audio would kind of fight for the 87.75 frequency here in Lake Geneva.

iAh, muy interesante! I did get WGVK DT 5 Kalamazoo that day, so I figure that it could have been this WI station then. Was looking at my post on wtfda.info from months back....I did hear the phone number 866-295-5305 mentioned, of which Google sent me to a business which I think sponsors a lot of radio shows, but I suppose Alex J. is one of them. I did hear the "New World Order" mentioned, I believe from one caller. So thank you '720!

I also heard that day on 87.9 a station playing "Dirty Laundry" by Don Henley, and another one playing a 1920s/30s tune.

All these were heard 9:30 to 11:00 EST on June 1, 2012. Anybody who could ID these other two, feel free.....The target area was MI/OH/IN thereabouts.

I caught that on E-skip 3 years ago as smooth jazz "The L," but I believe they are active rock now or something similar.

You are correct. As WLFM, they were smooth jazz. But the format got blown up recently in favor of alt rock. Part of a big local soap opera/fiasco. If you're interested, you can pick up some of the gory details on the Chicago board. It's like something out of a Marx Brothers movie.

As of earlier this morning, our "telephone pirate" appears to have hung up, so to speak.

Occasionally the audio at 87.76 from Global TV's Paris, Ontario analog transmitter. Canadians are still doing analog TV a little while longer.

Don't quote me, but I believe that the only analog-6 left in your region is the CTV in Deseronto, relaying CJOH Ottawa.
