FM Frequency of the Week: 88.5

Times have changed...we never had any when I was growing up
They're actually dying out now. I was surprised when I looked those two stations up. Public school districts as well as colleges are turning in their licenses because the students either don't care about radio anymore, or still like radio but don't see any future earning opportunities awaiting them in radio.

Tropo time
Not really
According to radio-locator Mankato is just outside of the fringe area

Far northwest Chicago suburbs.... 88.5 is WSFI, Catholic Radio from Antioch, IL. 6.1 kw with a null towards Chicago. 20 miles to my northeast. The result is a fair signal at my location, with the bulk of their coverage on the Wisconsin side of the state line.

I personally accept a fairly loose definition of Tropo:
First of all, I presume you do not usually recieve this station, and then you had it come in like a local.

Another test I can perform is if you notice several other stations from the Mason City area, and/or you can confirm that KBDC hasn't changed their pattern in any way.

The best time to recieve Tropo is overnight or in the early morning. You said "this morning", so you're right in the zone.

Finally, there's a difference between the tropo duct and a troposhperic enhancement. A duct is the classical definition of Tropo, where signals will air-duct to your town or city from 300+ miles away, whilst enhancement (what you experienced) takes signals from just beyond the horizon, and slides them into your area, often being very strong, like your station.

You may call it what you want, however I think you have Tropo, just TE instead of a Duct.

In the south and southwest suburbs of Chicago, and into Indiana, 88.5 is WHFH, the Homewood-Flossmoor High School station in Flossmoor, Ill. At 1,500 watts one of the more powerful high school stations in the country. Thanks to a superior training program – even doing radio documentaries – WHFH has sent many people into broadcasting, including a number of Chicago newscasters and White Sox TV playcaller Jason Benetti.

From Northwest Washington, it's Jazzer KNKX. With occasional interference from CIBH.
