Back to the Non-Comm section...what can you get on 90.9 FM?

Here in Vermilion, OH I get a pretty reliable signal from WRCJ/Detroit, MI with classical music during the daytime and jazz in the evenings/nights - operated by the Detroit Public School System. Sometimes, WCVJ/Jefferson, OH will mix in.

Northern VA,

WETA in DC with a non-commercial classical format. The station's HD-2 channel plays opera.

90.9 is semi-local KTBG in Warrensburg, Missouri, probably the station I listen to the most in this area.

It is prone to tropo interference from KPNO in Norfolk, Nebraska from time to time.

An interesting channel in suburban Rochester NY - it's a mix of two distant public stations, WJNY Watertown (relaying WCNY-FM Syracuse) and WSQG Ithaca (relaying WSKG Binghamton)...plus a wild-card, the little class D signal of WIRQ at Irondequoit High School. It's licensed to Rochester, but definitely a DX catch across town at my house.

(WIRQ is on its fourth frequency in half a century - it started on 90.9 in 1959, moved to 93.3 when the FCC tried to clear the class Ds off the NCE band in the 1980s, then was displaced to 94.3 when a local 93.3 signed on, then to 104.7 when a local 94.1 signed on, and then back to 90.9 when a local 104.9 signed on. I'm thinking that may well be a record of some sort.)

Most of Western Washington has KVTI Tacoma [NWPR] on 90.9. In the NW WA areas however, CBUX Vancouver will blend in. Had them once in Auburn/Kent WA when KVTI was off for whatever reason.

In Portland normally nothing comes in due to KBOO 90.7.

In Gary, IN, I get WDCB Glen Ellyn, IL, despite being well outside of the station's coverage area. This station gets out far, despite being on a short tower & operating at only 5kw.

WDCB does get out well as I'm 20 miles north of downtown Chicago and I hear it fine.

From Coldwater, MI-

Used to be a good frequency! As recently as 15 years ago, 90.9 was nothing but static. Detroit and Chicago would make it in from time to time.

Then WGBE signed on in Bryan, OH. Not a strong station, but enough to ruin the frequency for DX'ing. A couple years ago, WCFG signed on from Springfield, MI. Once again, not a strong station, but it ruined what was left of 90.9 DX opportunities here.

Sometimes if i'm lucky I can get WBSJ from Marion, IN, WGUC from Cincinnati and WILL from Urbana, but only during tropo.

On a side-note, WGBE isn't really necessary. As they simulcast a perfectly fine signal on 91.9 in Defiance, OH, just 15 miles south of Bryan.

Here in Warminster PA(Philadelphia area), it's local WHYY with a public news/talk format.

From Foley, AL -

WOWB, licensed to Brewton, Alabama as "WOW 90.9" with a CCM type format.

The station is 100 kW but their coverage area falls well short of where I live. Despite this, they "play" to this area as well as several Florida Counties where the signal is non-existent except during good tropo!

Here in Danville IL we get the semi-local 90.9 WILL Urbana although the tower is closer to Monticello IL
