FM Frequency of the Week - 93.1 MHz

What can you get on 93.1 FM?

Here in Vermilion, OH it is semi-local WZAK from Cleveland with an Urban AC format. When tropo is up across Lake Erie, WDRQ from Detroit will mix in or even take over the channel with an adult hits format as 'Doug FM'

From Coldwater, MI

One of my best frequencies!

Surprisingly, the closest station on this frequency, WMLY- Marshall, MI is a virtual no-show. But I can get on any given day..
WDRQ- Detroit, MI- Adult Hits (Doug FM)
WXRT- Chicago, IL- AAA
WIBC- Indianapolis, IN- News/Talk
WFGF- Lima, OH- ESPN (The Fan)
WZAK- Cleveland, OH- Urban AC
WMPA- Ferrysburg, MI- Country

Less frequently, I can receive
WIMK- Iron Mountain, MI- Rock- (K-Rock) Probably even less now since WMPA signed on.
WDLP-LP- Fenwick, MI- Oldies- Probably never again with WMPA there.
CHAY- Barrie, ON- AC- With patience, this one will occasionally fade up over WDRQ.

WPOC Baltimore, here in northern VA, weak reception due to IBOC from WFLS 93.3 Fredericksburg, VA. Before that IBOC, the signal was better.

I once got a class A 93.1 station from Cape May, NJ that had an alternative rock format, forgot the calls. According to what I saw on Radio-Locator and the station's website, this station is now Easy Listening WEZW. That was way before many stations turn on the IBOC and during a good tropo event in northen VA. That's all I got.

From Bowling Green, KY (October 2011)

I managed WIBC- Indianapolis, IN in the hotel parking lot. Making WIBC the only station from home (Coldwater, MI) that made the trip to Bowling Green.

I also had a weak WMKZ- Monticello, KY with a country format.

Here in the Philly 'burbs, 93.1 is usually splatter from local 93.3 WMMR. In good conditions, I have received WEZW Cape May,
WPAT Paterson/New York and WPOC Baltimore on 93.1.

In Monroe, WA all I get is IBOC from KUBE 93.3. CKYE Vancouver, BC does make it into Edmonds, WA however.
Also heard KPLV Las Vegas, NV during an e-skip opening, 5/22/11.

In Portland, OR I get KRYP Portland with Regional Mexican.

In Yakima, this frequency is a no-no due to KDBL 92.9's massive splatter.

East Tennessee: Normally local-semi-local WNOX. Sometimes a little bit of tropo will bring WSAA, Benton, TN in. That was the case when a transformer blew in West Knoxville and took WNOX off the air one morning.

Retro/other: I was in the shadow of Indianapolis's 93.1 in Indiana for a lot of years (WNAP, WEAG, WNOU, WNAP-FM, WIBC). When I lived in Lafayette it was usually them but sometimes tropo would be strong enough to cause WXRT to over-ride it. Before Lima's 93.1 signed on when I lived in Western Ohio, Detroit (WDRQ) was a frequent visitor,

That is sweet!!!

The station comes in nearly as good as V101 ( right on the edge of stereo at times ). Both stations do drift a bit, which is to be expected I guess, considering the range.

It must be so awesome to work at the transmitter site. The closest I've been to a radio transmitter was/is 102.5 KDON up on Fremont peak. That is one gorgeous hunk of metal and a tall SOB...

From Baldwin Co., AL, it's nothing but solid IBOC from WBLX on 92.9. I bet the IBOC sidebands alone are equivalent to a class A on each first adjacent.

^This post was from 2013 and I'd forgotten I'd ever participated in this thread.

Cumulus turned off the HD long ago on all but one of their Mobile and Pensacola stations, so this frequency is now a good DX target. I've logged WBBK Blakley, GA and WGDQ Sumrall, MS a few times each. That's 167 and 120 miles, respectively. Not great, but not bad for a first-adjacent to a monster signal.

On April 18th we had a massive tropo event here on the coast and I was able to add HXAAA Reynosa, Mexico, to the list. It's 715 miles out.

Far northwest suburban Chicago....

Here it's a solid WXRT, Chicago. Some of the Chicago signals can be a bit problematic out here 40+ miles from most of the sticks. Not so much WXRT. It's one of the better signals from the city.
