FM Frequency of the week: 93.3

Coldwater, MI

The main station on 93.3 is WBTU from Kendallville, IN. This station's 50kw blowtorch used to be 40 miles away from my location, but about five years ago they downgraded to an 18.5kw B1 and moved closer to Fort Wayne. Since the downgrade, i've been able to hear..

WKQZ- Midland, MI (140 miles)
WLDB- Milwaukee, WI (170 miles)
WLZT- Ashville, OH (190 miles)
WNCD- Youngstown, OH (220 miles)
WPBG- Peoria, IL (250 miles)
W227BY- Somerset, MI (30 miles)

I've also heard a ton of stations on 93.3 via e-skip.

KITE- Port Lavaca, TX
WFLZ- Tampa, FL
WQUE- New Orleans, LA
KYYA- Billings, MT
KDHT- Austin, TX
KTCL- Fort Collins, CO
KDBN- Haltom City, TX
KKOB- Albuquerque, NM

93.3 is splatter here in Ottawa, but one of the frequencies in my travels that I've heard many stations on, including some all time favourite stations.
KIOA in Des Moines
KUBE in Seattle and
WQUE in New Orleans are the most memorable.

Here in Poughkeepsie, NY, the only thing I've heard on 93.3 is local WBWZ. I've never caught them off the air.

Chris from Poughkeepsie

From Durham, NC...
Regular is WERO, Washington (that's North Carolina, not District of Columbia)
WFLS, Fredericksburg, VA
WTPT, Forest City, NC (but basically a Greenville/Spartanburg station).
WWWZ, Charleston, SC

E-Skip
WBSZ, Ashland, WI
KTLS, Ada, OK
KIOA, Des Moines, IA
WTLT, Naples, FL
KBLB, Nisswa, MN
KAGL, El Dorado, AR
KKNG, Newcastle, OK
KDHT, Cedar Park, TX
CJMF, Quebec City, QC
KITE, Port Lavaca, TX

Usually Asheville, OH and Cincinnati (WAKW) fighting it out depending where you are in southwest Ohio. WBTU has made it through, and when I lived in Indiana I occasionally heard Peoria. WBTU has a signal that can be heard all over Indiana and even into Illinois.

Rob, last summer I saw a report from the WTFDA DXing group of WNCV being heard on E skip in the northeast, PA or NJ I think.
another DXer in Orlando, FL heard em a couple weeks ago on tropo.

Before WNCV fired up on Aug 2, 2006 many stations logged from here with WPGG "Power Pig FM" country in southern Alabama the usual station followed by WQUE New Orleans and WFLZ in Tampa

93.3 here is normally WBSZ, Ashland, WI, a 71 kW country station 69 miles away that produces a fairly good signal at home on a car radio.

If you drive a little bit west, or if conditions are up in that direction, it'll be KBLB, Nisswa, a 100 kW country station about 100 miles to the west of here.

I've also heard WIZM, La Crosse, but that one's rare.

On E-Skip I've gotten quite a few here, between 916 and 1169 miles: WSYE, WFLS, WVFJ, WERO, WQUE. Interestingly all of these stations are from "The South".

WTPT "The Planet" (active rock), Greenville, S.C., had a really good signal in the Charlotte area when it first increased power in about 1990 (it was smooth jazz WBBO then). It's also one of the few stations I can pick up in my motel room when I go to the N.C. mountains.

I have picked up Bob FM (Top 40/Hot AC) in the Greenville, N.C., market in my motel room in Myrtle Beach.

Before Coast took over, Quincy, FL (country)

-Rob

Dominated by local KDBN in Dallas.

But - in Palm Bay, FL, where I used to live, it was very interesting. The translator on 93.3 in Melbourne W227AF rapidly weakens as you go South into Palm Bay, making the parent station WSCF a more attractive alternative. But - skip is frequent from Florida's West Coast and 93.3 is often overridden by what is now WFLZ Tampa.

The little 93.3 translator became a DX terminal for more distant 91.9's on occasion. WYFO was a frequent and annoying problem.

coming back from reading to pottsville, i had WMMR on. its was clear the whole way except for one stretch of road right before summit station (strausstown maybe?) it was most likely an oldies station judging by the music they were playing, then it was WMMR in summit station again for the rest of the ride back.

any idea what this could have been?

It was probably Oldies 93 (WBZD) from Muncy, PA. It's a class B1 and probably can be received on the north faces of the mountains that far south where you describe.

Thank You! that was driving me crazy that i didnt know what was coming over the radio.

Where I live, in Charleston, Z-93 (WWWZ), the local rap station, is the local station.

Z-93 has a pretty good signal, available about fifty miles away, but nothing compared to the local stations at 96.9, 103.5, and 92.5. The Planet dominates the Upstate, as you can hear it anywhere north of Columbia.

Those signals can be heard all the way from Savannah to the NC beaches around Sunset and Ocean Isle pretty clearly on a good day.

They can also be heard sometimes in Brunswick, GA, and as far away as Lumberton, NC.

I recieve 2 KZOZ San Lius Obisbo CA 150 Miles,@ From Merced 50 miles not sure of the call letters.
