FM Frequency of the week - 93.5 MHz

What do you get on FM 93.5?

Here in Vermilion it is usually a weak to moderate WRQN/Bowling Green. Sometimes CBCL/London, ON will take over the frequency.

From Coldwater, MI-

93.5 is my most open frequency. Only WHMI- Howell, MI and WRQN- Bowling Green, OH make it into here on a regular basis. Sometimes CBCL- London, ON, WMXQ- Hartford City, IN and WVIX- Lemont, IL make it in. 93.5 is one of two frequencies i've received translators through via Es (88.7 being the other).

A good DX frequency was made even better a few years ago when nearby WBTU (93.3) moved closer to Fort Wayne and downgraded their signal in the process. Also, there's no way semi-local blowtorch WBCT (93.7) uses all 320,000 of their licensed watts, as they produce no bleed at all on the frequency.

However, there are two 250w translators on the move to my area. I suspect one of them will scoop up the 93.5 frequency. Whoever gets it will enjoy coverage almost like a small class A!

Can you do that next week? Why do you need two of the same response in one day?

Now there's some new Spanish music station on 93.5, it started up a couple months ago I think. And it's only 400 kHz upriver from another (KRYP)!

93.5 is totally dominated by KSKS 93.7, which is a Grandfathered station with 68 KW ERP at 4700 ft Above sea level and 4400 ft above the valley floor in the San Joaquin Valley, HAAT is 2000 ft, and is located in the Sierra- Nevada mountains, at Meadow Lakes, 20 miles away from me, In Clovis.
KSKS 93.7 has the most powerful signal in Central CA and is in the top 10 for CA.

Manassas, VA

Usually nothing, otherwise I coukl hear a W228FM religious translator from Frederick, MD about 45 miles with my Tecsun PL-380 outside and a clear view to the north. Normally it's an IBOC hash from WFLS 93.3 Fredericksburg, VA 35 miles away to the south. Recent slight tropo openings this week allowed me to hear very weak rock station WZBH from Georgetown, DE and WBBC "Bobcat Country" Blackstone, VA about 100 miles away.

Here in SW Florida 93.5 is the over splatter of WTLT 93.7 "Lite 93". WTLT actually started out back in the 1970's on 93.5. It was originally known as WRGI and served the Naples area with a Top 40 format. After some ownerships changes over the years it moved to 93.7 to allow a power increase. The city of license was also moved to Sanibel Island. Today it primarily serves the Fort Myers area.

From Greenville, PA, usually CBCL 93.5/ London and hash from WNCD 93.3/ Youngstown.

An interesting channel here in suburban Rochester NY: WVBR Ithaca NY or CBCL London ON when the trops are up, but it used to be a fairly strong CBCP Peterborough ON until that CBC R1 signal was moved to 98.7 some years back. That cleared the way for 93.3 to sign on in nearby Cobourg...but we don't hear it here because of local WFKL 93.3 Fairport NY...which blocked out 93.5 with IBOC for a while, until it turned off its IBOC.

In Houston, typically splatter from local adjacent KKRW at 93.7. Occassionally, classic rocker KBHT/Crockett will show up at 93.5 for the northern side of town.

In Durham, North Carolina, 93.5 MHz is usually BBN affiliate WYFQ-FM in Wadesboro (outside Charlotte), a remarkably consistent signal given its distance and power. If not WYFQ-FM, we get Blackstone, Virginia's WBBC "(3.5 Bobcat Country"), and, on occassion, Spanish-formatted WLQB in Ocean Isle Beach, NC. My other DX catches on that frequency are:

WZRK, Hancock, MI
WKEY, Key West, FL
KKOT, Columbus, NE
KOOK, Junction, TX
WHMI, Howell, MI
KBFC, Forrest City, AR
KBHT, Crockett, TX
WEZQ, Bangor, ME
CIKX, Grand Falls, NB
WKMJ, Hancock, MI
WBCM, Boyne City, MI
KITN, Worthington, MN
KLMR, Lamar, CO
KLXK, Breckenridge, TX

(call letters current as of catch, but may have changed)

In Gary Indiana, 93.5 is an open frequency, but I do get a weak signal from WVIX from the Joliet Illinois area. WVIX is a simulcast of WVIV 103.1. The only time 93.5 becomes a problem is if WBCT 93.7 comes in from Grand Rapids, MI, as that station is 320kw, transmitting from the same tower that WOOD-TV transmits from.

Which Vermilion would that be? Google maps lists several.

EDIT: Just figured you are in Ohio. Apologies.

That's quite a haul from Bowling Green. I wish Google maps gave straight line distances, but what, about 300 miles?

No problem. I meant to put Ohio in there but left it out by mistake. Bowling Green, OH is about 65 miles from me as the crow flies. Interesting thing here in Vermilion, OH is that there used to be a very low-powered station, which could only be heard within about a mile of their transmitter (provided WRQN and/or CBCL wasn't coming in unusually strong). They were calling themselves '93.5 the Urge' playing a mix of CHR and alternative rock. I haven't heard them on the air in at least 2 years now.

Splatter from 93.3 WMMR and 93.7 WSTW. I am trying for WZBH 93.5 which is an awesome rock station that is better than WMMR, it is located in Georgetown DE (Ocean City, MD)

I suddenly remembered from watching coverage of the last US election that Ohio was 'the buckeye state'

Bowling Green, OH is about 65 miles from me as the crow flies..

I thought you meant Bowling Green Kentucky. :D

Never mind, a quick lie down and I'll be as right as rain.

:D

Here in Poughkeepsie, NY, thanks to WTBQ-AM translator (Warwick NY) W288CG last month moving to 93.5, it's now a 3-way, with the translator plus WVIP (formerly WRTN) New Rochelle, NY, and WZCR Hudson, NY (the weakest of the three). Now there are 21 channels here where a local or semi-local translator is the dominant or strong secondary station. It certainly makes FM DX more challenging.

DX on 93.5 since 2003 includes:

WUSD Hartford, AL "Kickin' Country 93.5"
KLEZ Bismarck, AR "Easy 93"
WZBH Georgetown, DE "The Beach"
WPBH/WEBZ Port St. Joe, FL "Rock 93.5"
KQCS Bettendorf, IA "Star 93.5"
KKDT Burdett, KS "Dave 93.5"
KWME Wellington, KS "Oldies 93.5"
CJEL Winkler, Manitoba "The Eagle"
WFQR Harwich Port, MA “Frank FM”
KITN Worthington, MN “The Breeze”
WHJT Clinton, MS “Star 93.5 - Radio for Real Life”
WMYK Osage Beach, MO “Mike FM”
KKOT Columbus, NE “The Hawk”
WVBR Ithaca, NY
WOKR Remsen, NY “The River”
CBCL London, ON - CBC Radio One
WSBG Stroudsburg, PA “Lite 93.5”
WKWX Savannah, TN
KBHT Crockett, TX - Most-distant on 93.5 at 1408 miles.
WOZZ New London, WI - via meteor scatter.
