FM Frequency of the Week: 93.5

If I remember, each week I (or somebody else if they want to) will make a "frequency of the week" thread, asking what you hear and have heard on that frequency from your location (or locations). The first frequency I'll pick is 93.5 - simply because this is my clearest frequency here.

Normally, I hear nothing on 93.5. There must be good tropo or skip conditions to hear anything on it. This is simply because the nearest station is WKMJ-FM, Hancock, MI, A/C format C3 with 13.5 kW of power, 177 miles to the east. I've only heard it once or twice - in the summer, 50-kw'er KITN from Worthington, 270 miles to the SW, is much more common, even on a car radio. Even with seemingly flat tropo conditions, this one can come in. But it's not regular reception.

Being as clear as it is, this frequency is great for longer tropo to Columbus, NE and E-Skip. Copying and pasting from my log, these are the stations I've heard there over time:

93.5 WKMJ MI Hancock 177 06/29/07 0145 Tr Mix 93, A/C
93.5 WOZZ WI New London 237 08/13/07 2120 Tr “OZZ”
93.5 KITN MN Worthington 270 08/04/01 Tr
93.5 KKOT NE Columbus 448 08/05/01 Tr
93.5 KLMR CO Lamar 798 06/26/07 Es T-Storm Warnings
93.5 WSBG PA Stroudsburg 943 05/11/07 1425 Es
93.5 KLXK TX Breckenridge 1026 06/30/07 1715 Es “93.5 K-Lakes” “Today's Best Country”
93.5 WZBH DE Georgetown 1033 05/11/07 1323 Es “The Beach”, DE physicians mention
93.5 WVOH GA Hazelhurst 1151 06/28/07 1404 Es Nice ID!

Good subject. We have a very strong 93.3 (WSNE) about 50 mi S of us and a very strong 93.7 (lawrene-Boston) about 50 mi NE of us. I think I'll do a preset ot 93.5 and see if I get lucky (radiowise that is).

From Coldwater, MI, 93.5 is one of my best frequencies as well. Being 55 miles away from blowtorch WBCT (93.7) and 50 miles from WBTU (93.3) these stations serve as protection for 93.5. Only an LPFM or translator could be put on this frequency.

Here is what I hear on 93.5, ordered by most common to least.
WHMI- Howell, MI- Classic Hits- 5.2kw, 73 miles
WRQN- Bowling Green, OH- Oldies- 7kw, 77 miles
WVIX- Joliet, IL- Spanish- 6kw, 157 miles
CBCL- London, ON- Public Radio- 100kw, 198 miles
WHTY- Hartford City, IN- Classic Hits- 3kw, 107 miles
WKHY- Lafayette, IN- Rock- 6kw, 149 miles
WEBX- Tuscola, IL- Rock- 6kw, 222 miles

This is a good post idea!

the only 2 that stand out that I remember hearing are KKMI Burlington Iowa and KQCS Davenport Iowa. Every where Else I've lived, there has always been something to block that frequency out.

93.5 was a good frequency here for E skip until a new 50kw station on 93.3 went up in 8/06 just 3 miles away.

total 30 stations identified on this channel. Furthest CJEL Winkler, Manitoba 1421 miles. Only 3 via tropo: WMLV Butler, AL 161 miles, WPBH Parker, FL 93 miles, WVOH Hazelhurst, GA 260 miles.

Not much here as local WFCJ splatters all over it. Have heard WHTY out of Hartford City, In several times. WRQN in Toledo has made it here once or twice.

Not a lot to hear in my area, because KPDQ (93.9) and KRYP (93.1) tend to splatter all over 93.5. If I had a better antenna on my radio I might be able to receive something outside of that.

;D (Then again, my birthday's coming in a couple of weeks.......) ;D

This has been one of my best frequencies. I've heard 37 stations in 20 states, 4 Canadian provinces, and two Mexican states. 93.5 is home to by far my most frequent meteor scatter catch, CBCL London, Ontario. It's also home to my lowest-powered E-skip catch, K228DL, a 74-watt translator in Wray, Colorado. (heard twice) Finally, it's home to one of my two rare tropo catches from the Appalachians, WAXM-Virginia - anything east of Knoxville is REAL difficult here.

The three regular catches here on 93.5 are WKWX and WKBL, both roughly 140 miles west of here in West Tennessee; and WJPS, about 120 miles away in Indiana.

I see I've heard three of the stations Randy (KW4RZ) mentions: CJEL, WMLV, and WVOH, the latter two also on tropo. I've also got CBCL in common with Lawppy...

Here near Poughkeepsie, NY, two weak signals fight it out on car radio while driving around: WVIP (formerly WRTN) New Rochelle, NY (Jamaican) and WZCR Hudson, NY (Oldies), with constant hash from local WBZW on 93.3. During the summer WSBG-Pa and WZBH-Del occasionally make it in at my DX Shack. Last Sept I heard CBCL - Ontario for my first and only time. It seems this station is heard everywhere!! A total of 13 stations have been heard here on 93.5 in the past 5 years, most distant at 1271 miles is 100 kw powerhouse CJEL - Winkler, Manitoba, "The Eagle" from a June 2003 E-skip opening.
