FM Frequency of the Week - 94.5 MHz

What do you all get on 94.5 FM?

Here in Vermilion, OH it's semi-local WXKR/Port Clinton, OH with classic rock as '94-5, XKR!'. During tropo conditions I have heard WCEN/Hemlock, MI with country as '94.5 the Moose', WWSW/Pittsburgh with classic hits as '94-5, 3WS' and CIBU/Wingham, ON as '94.5 the Bull' I have also caught WARO/Naples, FL in e-skip once.

Here in Warminster PA(Philadelphia area), it's local WPST(Top 40/CHR station) from Trenton NJ. I listen to it all the time. Sometimes, though, WDAC from Lancaster(religious station) would come in over WPST
during tropo situations.

A great channel for me! (Well maybe not so much now that I am in Marysville...)

Mainly CFBT Vancouver, BC with a strong signal. Sometimes K233BU White Center WA (KMIH), sometimes KRXY Shelton WA.

Have also heard, tropo or E-skip:
KATS Yakima WA (Rock)
KLIQ Hastings NE (Soft Rock)
KOOL Phoenix AZ (Classic Hits)
KRFD Merino CO (Country)
KSKL Scott City KS (Soft Rock)
KXLI Moapa NV (now Jelli, received via E-skip when they were "The Vibe")
KYAT Gallup NM (now Najavo format, picked up when they were Hot AC Star 94.5)

You caught WARO up in Ohio? Impressive. WARO 94.5 is a 100,000 watt station but still impressive for it to get that far. WARO is one of the oldest FM stations here in SW Florida going on the air sometime in the 1960s as WNFM which stood for "Naples Fine Music". It played your typical easy listening format for years. It was the sister station to WNOG 1270AM which is the heritage station in Naples. In the mid 70's or so it increased it's power to the current 100,000 watts allowing it to cover all of SW Florida not just the Naples area. About the same time the call letters were changed to WCVU which stood for "Seaview". It continued with it's easy listening format for many years thereafter. Somewhere in the late 80's or early 90's the modernized the format turning it more toward soft rock. In the mid 90's they dumped that format for the current Classic Rock programing that they still have to this day. I know there were many older folks who objected to the new format but the stations moved on without them It was at this time they changed the call letters to the current WARO.

WARO was locally owned for most of its existence by the Palmer family who also owned WNOG and the local cable company. It was sold off to it's current owners about 12 years or so ago. While it remains licensed to Naples all it's programing now comes from studios in Ft Myers where it is a part of cluster of 9 radio stations and 2 TV stations.

In northern VA, I get IBLOCK from WIAD in DC. Sometimes when it's off, I could get (with XDR-F1HD) WDAC Lancaster, PA or WRVQ Richmond, VA. Once heard WWSW Pittsburgh via tropo; extremely seldom tropo from west of the Appalachians.

The magic of E-skip prop. SWFL! 800-1300 mile stuff is very possible during e-skip openings. For you swfl, try during May through early August - you can get skip from up in the Northeastern US, maybe TX, maybe Central America.

Allendale, MI: All WTNR, all the time (their stick is less than 10 miles from there)
Manistee, MI: WTNR, WCEN Hemlock, MI, and WLWK Milwaukee, WI alternating, WRJO Eagle River, WI makes rare appearances

In Houston, local alternative rock KTBZ-FM "94-5 The Buzz".

Kenosha, WI- WLWK Milwaukee (local). This was, until a few years ago, heritage Hot AC WKTI until Journal blew it up.

Most likely to be heard during tropo conditions- WTNR Holland, MI, WLRW Champaign, IL.

Depending on the time of the year, we have WERB-FM 94.5 from Berlin (CT) High School. Otherwise, I may get a blip from WJMN-FM 94.5 of Boston a couple of times a year.

Really nothing here in Knoxville but bleedover from WNFZ (switching from alternative to talk Friday). Occasionally Lexington will show up. There is a pirate in Maynardsville TN maybe 30 miles away but I've not recieved it yet.

If I get anything on 94.5, it's WLWK Milwaukee, WI. Normally, I get nothing, because of WLS-FM on 1st adjacent 94.7.

On U.S. 33, west of Harrisonburg, VA at the VA/WV line I get "3WS" out of Pittsburgh on the west side of the mountain and "Q94" Richmond on the east side!

Here in Southeastern Pennsylvania, Northern Delaware, Northeastern Maryland and Western New Jersey,

WDAC 94.5fm HD-1 The Voice of Christian Radio has been broadcasting loud and clear for around 55 consecutive years now; Also available in HD and streaming on-line, world-wide.

In the Portland area it is splatter from local 94.7 KNRK. South of the Portland Metro it is KMGE from Eugene, and north of the Metro area it is KLYK from Kelso, WA.

Far northwest suburbs of Chicago.... Its a (usually) weak 94.5 from Milwaukee. (WTMJ's sister operation). They just flipped to country and back to their former WKTI call letters from WLWK.

94.5 used to be an open frequency in San Antonio until this past November, when we got a 250 watt translator for the ESPN station on 1250 AM.

So far I've logged KTBZ in Houston and KFRQ, Q94.5 The Rock Station, in Harlingen via tropo. Nothing new since the translator.

There used to be several short spaced Class Cs and Class Bs within 250 miles or so which came in, but because there was a semi local WHFI/WMJC/WCSX on 94.7, these were not usually heard because most ran at lower ERP and HAAT and old Paragraph 73.213 short spaced nondirectional facilities. WCEN was the closest, about 65 miles away but with just 16 kw from 225 feet. WJBL-FM, now WTNR, moved in toward Grand Rapids, MI from Holland, MI, but with just 10 kW from 500 feet. I can't recall what WRWR Port Clinton, OH, now WXKR, facilities were. WKTI Milwaukee, WI, WWSW Pittsburgh, PA, and WNED Buffalo, NY were heard on tropo occasionally. Their Class C and Class B distance separations kept the channels relatively clear of new drop ins other than grandfathered short spacing until Docket 80-90 came along.
