FM frequency of the week - 94.5

Usually the lower sideband of KNRK because I am fairly close to their stick. If I manage to null it out I can sometimes get KLYK out of Kelso (~40 miles from my place, about half-an-hour's jaunt up I-5.)

But that's on my regular FM sets. On either of my F1HDs, 94.5 is nothing *but* KLYK!

In Phoenix, Arizona, it's local KOOL 94.5 broadcasting from South Mountain with a oldies classic hits format. KOOL is a class C station that is one of the oldest FM oldies stations in the country broadcasting with an oldies format since 1971. Keep it KOOL! 8)

In SW Florida 94.5 is home to WARO "Arrow 94" classic rock. This station operates with 99,000 watts and is actually one of the oldest FM's in SW Florida starting out as WNFM then for many years it was WCVU "Seaview" playing easy listening. It was the sister FM to Naples WNOG 1270 which is the heritage station in the Naples area. It is now part of the WINK/Meridain group which also owns WNOG along with many other stations in Naples/Ft Myers.

From between Gurnee and Libertyville, IL, 94.5 is variety hits WLWK Milwaukee, WI ("Lake FM"). It sends a pretty decent signal to this area and any even slightly selective radio gets it loud and clear along with 1st adjacent WLS-FM Chicago (94.7).

In Carthage-Watertown, NY area its the 100kw powerhouse WYYY from Syracuse. They broadcast in HD but I haven't been able to get a lock on them because there is a 94.7 near Watertown that adds to much interference.

Northern VA;

It's the IBOC sideband from DC's WIAD 94.7; when I could null it out, I could hear Richmond's Q94 or WDAC from Lancaster, PA.

Rochester NY: This is a fun channel, since we're halfway between two grandfathered 100kW superpower class Bs - WYYY in Syracuse to the east, WNED-FM in Buffalo to the west. I can go from one to the other by rotating my rooftop antenna. In the car, it's back and forth from one to the other depending on terrain and propagation from day to day.

Here in Poughkeepsie, NY, 94.5 used to be a real good DX channel, then last year WFUV Fordham University (New York City) put a translator on the air in nearby Beacon, NY. Now I get that translator (W233BM) from Beacon, 20 miles, with the antenna aimed South, and "K-Love", WYKV Ravena, NY (54 miles) with the antenna aimed North.

DX on 94.5 since 2003:

WHOD Jackson, AL
KFPW Barling, AR
WCFB Daytona Beach, FL "Star"
WARO Naples, FL
WFLF Parker FL "WFLA", previously logged as WFBX "The Fox"
WFDR Woodbury, GA "Mountain Country 94.5"
K233AA Davenport, IA, relaying KUNI, 170 watts
WIBW Topeka, KS "94 country"
KSMB Lafayette, LA
KRUF Shreveport, LA "K 94.5"
WJMN Boston, MA "Jammin'"
WJZD Long Beach, MS "JZ-94.5"
KKLR Poplar Bluff, MO "Clear 94"
KLIQ Hastings, NE "The Breeze"
K233AN Lincoln, NE "My Bridge Radio", relay KROA, 99 watts
WPST Trenton, NJ (used to be very common in summer), previously logged as WTHK "The Hawk".
WNED Buffalo, NY
W233AH Monticello, NY, relay WJFF. 9 watts, 43 miles.
WYYY Syracuse, NY "Y-94"
WCMS Hatteras, NC
KQDY Bismarck, ND "KQ-94.5" - most-distant on 94.5 at 1365 miles
CIBU Wingham, ON "The Bull"
WDAC Lancaster, NY "The Voice"
WYEZ Murrells Inlet, SC "Yes 94.5"
KPLO Reliance, SD "94-Country"
WRJO Eagle River, WI "W-R-J-Oldies"

In Houston, it is local KTBZ-FM. "94-5 The Buzz" playing alternative music since July 2000.

Here in western New Jersey WPST rules 94.5. But it doesn't take too much tropo for WDAC in Lancaster PA to give PST fits, or even override them! If there's a super tropo event WRVQ Richmond could sneak in.

Same here in Warminster PA. WPST, with WDAC overpowering sometimes.

From Coldwater, MI

94.5 is a mish-mash of two weak signals. WTNR- Holland, MI (Thunder 94.5) and WXKR- Port Clinton, OH. When enhancement is up, you can throw WCEN- Hemlock, MI (The Moose) into the mix. With my antenna pointed SW in the WTNR/WXKR null, I often can pull in WLRW- Champaign, IL (Mix 94.5). There is a first adjacent at 94.7 in nearby Bronson, but they cause little or no interference on the frequency until you get south and west of Coldwater.

94.5 is also the home of my best tropo translator reception. On 6/1/2009, I received K233AA from Davenport, IA at a distance of 289 miles. I did extensive research online just to make sure I was indeed getting this. All signs pointed to this 250 watt translator.

I've also got a ton of stations via Es.

In Murfreesboro, TN (~30 mi SE of Nashville):

WFGZ 94.5 ("The Dove") is my biggest obstacle to overcome. They are 82 miles WNW of here, and run 22kw. Luckily for me, they have frequent technical problems and have been off the air for days or weeks at a time over the past couple years.

I've logged 9 other stations via tropo, ranging from translators 36 and 52 miles away, as well as 7 full power stations ranging from 168 miles away (WJOX Birmingham, AL) to 685 miles away (WTBZ Houston, TX).

While I still have some audio and hand written logs to review from late summer of 2010, up to that point, I've logged 8 stations via Es on 94.5. They range from 733 miles away (WYYY Syracuse, NY) to 1,248 miles away (KKOR Gallup, NM).

Complete logbook with logs with audio for most stations at my website: http://kg6vsw.com/DX%20Audio.html

Most common in Clovis (Fresno) is KGEN from Tulare, I have also pick up KBAY in San Jose, but things are going to change, there a new station that has been running a test signal, the station is KCGC from Coarsegold CA 20 miles north of me that totally dominates over KGEN which is 50 miles South-East of me.

I live 160 miles northwest of Myrtle Beach by car, buty even 10 miles to the south and 20 miles to the west Rhythmic Oldies Movin 94.5, only 6000 watts, can be heard. Normally in both locations I pick up WPTI Rush Radio (Beck, Hannity, Limbaugh, etc.), though early in the morning it's Unique FM from Greenville, SC sometimes. A beautiful music station that makes even the most boring easy listening station you can imagine sound hip.

I can't really get anything here because I'm right next to 94.3 WSCC. But, when I can, it's usually Movin. WMUU is one of the sleepiest stations of any format in the Carolinas. They are owned by Bob Jones University, and that huge signal is wasted, but less than Pacifica's stations.

They do serve a purpose, and have a lot of listeners.
