FM Frequency of the Week: 94.7

Kenosha, WI- So since no one in the area has chimed in, our "local" is WLS-FM. 4400 Watts from the Willis Tower. Their signal is probably among the worst Chicago full-market FMs up here across the state line; it gets eaten up by WKTI HD sideband.

Lets see if I can remember all their call sign changes. WLS, WDAI (a Great rock station, until Disco DAI happened), WRCK, WLS again, WYTZ (country), WXCD (CD 94.7), WZZN (The Zone), and WLS once more.

Over the years I have heard WCSX Birmingham (Detroit) MI, WFBQ Indianapolis, KSHE Crestwood (St. Louis) MO, WZOR Michicot WI.
I think the revolving call saga goes like this: WENR-FM, WLS-FM, WDAI, WLS-FM, WRCK, WYTZ, WKXK, WXCD, WLS-FM, WZZN, WLS-FM. Crazy!

From Aberfoyle ON:
What a bummer this week. Only CHKX Hamilton ON country 25 km south blasting in day and night. No other station has a chance. And 94.9 is swamped by the upper digital channel.

I assume WLS use to sound better in Kenosha way back in the pre-HD days?
Yes. HD sidebands and translators have pretty much ruined clear reception of many Chicago FMs. Which is funny, since Kenosha is in the Chicago radio market. Chicago FMs used to be perfectly usable well into Racine. There are now a bunch of translators in Milwaukee on Chicago channels.

In the Wilkes-Barre(Northeast PA) area, there are two translators broadcasting on the frequency depending on which direction the antenna is facing. Normally I mostly receive W234CY, a simulcaster for WITK 1550 which runs a Christian religious format from the Wilkins Radio Network. The translator broadcasts from a transmitter situated along the Susquehanna River in Pittston, and puts out a decent signal, despite having an adjacent WRTI transator on 94.9. However, placing my radio in a southern direction, I can also pull in W234BH out of Berwick,, a simulcaster for 930 WHLM which runs Seven Mountain Media's "Pop Radio" CHR format. These two stations interfere with each other as you drive along Route 309 outside the mall.
